Presentation on theme: "Do now: “a fable for tomorrow”"— Presentation transcript:

1 Do now: “a fable for tomorrow”
In the last paragraph the metaphor, :”a grim specter has crept upon us," is used. What is the grim specter? How is America being affected by it? (state 2 ways, specifically). How does the metaphor create a message for what people should do for this country---?

2 Lesson target I CAN Analyze how an author's ideas or claims are developed and refined by particular sentences, paragraphs, or larger portions of a text.

3 Why is this important? The “Fable for Tomorrow” is based on the book Silent Spring that Rachel Carson wrote. The metaphor- grim specter has crept upon us, is death. The book is about DDT, a pesticide that was used in the 60's and early 70's before it was banned. Her book helped to bring about the ban. In the book, she has everything taking place in a town situated in the heartland of America. She explained how the bees were no longer pollinating the fruit trees and how this affected, not only humans, but animals also. How does DDT get into our water sources and affect the eco-system, from insects, to land and sea creatures right up to humans? Carson argues, as a result of these actions, America is slowly destroying herself in the use of this pesticide.

4 Task: TEXT DEPENDENT QUESTIONS (CITE EVIDENCE FROM THE TEXT)
1.In the first two paragraphs of Carson’s piece, she paints a picture of the “heart of America.” What words/phrases does she use and what tone does this strike? EXAMPLE: Tone: is idealistic, bucolic, nice, peaceful, pretty Purpose of asking this question: sets up what America used to look like provides contrast for the ensuing text 2. Using lines 22-23, identify when this America existed. 3. In line 25 Carson says, “a strange blight crept over the area and things began to change.” Identify who or what fell under the “evil spell.” 4. How does Carson use the three rhetorical devices to illustrate her concerns?

5 closure Discuss how you analyzed how an author's ideas or claims were developed and refined by particular sentences, paragraphs, or larger portions of “A Fable for Tomorrow.”.

6 EFFECTS OF THE “EVIL SPELL”
homework Make a TREE MAP of the effects on the three groups impacted by the “evil spell.” EFFECTS OF THE “EVIL SPELL” ANIMALS NATURE HUMANS L 26-27: chickens -mysterious maladies L 28:cattle and sheep -sickened and died
