2. Standards ELACC9-10L1: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. ELACC9-10RL1: Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text. ELACC9-10RL4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the cumulative impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone. ELACC9-10W2: Write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey complex ideas, concepts, and information clearly and accurately through the effective selection, organization, and analysis of content.

3. Warm Up: (Step 1) What kind of choices do you have to make? Write down four choices that you have made this summer. (ex. Go to the beach for the family trip or go to your sports camp.)

4. (Step 2) Put your four choices in order from most important to least important.

5. (step 3) Discuss and compare your choices with an elbow partner. (4 minutes)

7. Metaphors!!! The definition of a metaphor is "a figure of speech containing an implied comparison, in which a word or phrase ordinarily and primarily used of one thing is applied to another. Metaphor: Situation vs. the Real Thing You may have often heard expressions such as: He drowned in a sea of grief. She is fishing in troubled waters. All these expressions have one thing in common: a situation is compared to a real thing, although the situation is not actually that particular thing.

9. Comprehension check What are the differences between the two roads? Is the speaker happy with his choice? Do you think it was a difficult decision? In your opinion, what does the poem mean?

10. Homework!! (Due Thursday, August 6 th ) Your assignment is to find a song or poem that has at least one metaphor in it. Quote the metaphor (you may bring in the song lyrics or have the actual phone stored on your device.) Analyze and explain = (1 paragraph) 1. Explain the metaphor 2. Explain its meaning 3. Describe how it relates to the message of the song or poem.
