The Learning Journey This is the start of your child’s learning journey and of a really important partnership between home and school. To make it really successful, we need to share with you how the Nursery works, what to expect and how you can help to support your child.

A Typical Day We open at 8.45am and finish between 3.00/3.15pm.
Start dates and times will be different to help with settling in. Children find their peg, hang up their coat and put their water bottle and lunch box away. Children find their name card on their spaceship and stick it on the planet. A formal register will follow. Time is then flexible for children to choose an activity until 9.00 am. This is a good time to talk to your child’s key worker if there is a concern.

It is helpful to settle your child to an activity, say goodbye and leave. Obviously, you know your child, but generally the longer you stay the harder it is to leave for both of you. All the staff are very experienced at distraction techniques if the children are upset. Sometimes, we may phone to reassure you that your child is fine, if they have been very upset. You are welcome to ring us if you are concerned. At 9.15am we register children in key worker groups and count up.

Children then play inside/outside
Children then play inside/outside. Provision is wide and varied, offering a range of topic related and child initiated activities. During the week the children participate in teacher focused activities, targeted phonics and Busy Bee challenges, which meet curriculum objectives of the Early Years Curriculum. All their achievements and outcomes are recorded in their electronic profiles, Tapestry, which will be accessible online and can be shared with your child at any time. Please see a member of staff if you cannot access Tapestry. Stay and Play sessions will be organised when the children have settled.

The Cafe Children can access the café at any time, where a healthy snack and milk is provided. Children’s name and symbol will be on their milk. This is a social time for news and discussion. It is an ideal time to have a conversation with a friend.

Lunches All children will be having packed lunches in the Nursery with our staff. They will be encouraged to eat, but anything remaining will be left in the box so that you can see what has been eaten.

Independence A general expectation is, that the children will come to Nursery toilet trained. Obviously, we know at this age that children do have accidents, but dealing with this does take staff away from teaching. Please do speak to us early on if you feel that there is an issue. All children need a change of clothes to hang on their peg. We also encourage children to be independent putting on and taking off their coats, putting own aprons on, climbing stairs and walking/running. Also, they will be encouraged to eat and drink independently. Your help would be greatly appreciated in these areas.

School Uniform Nursery is a very messy place with sticking, painting and ‘messy’ play. We have a uniform, which is very practical, dark blue sweatshirt, and can be bought online or at The Uniform Centre. This is not compulsory . Pull up trousers with elasticated waists are the most practical for getting up and down in a hurry. Name everything please!

Book Club & Nursery Fund
Book Club runs on Wednesday am and pm. Children save for book by a collection of stamps and the small profit helps us to fund new equipment in Nursery. A 50p contribution per week also pays for playdough, baking etc. The piggy banks are in both classroom areas. We are very grateful for any contributions.

Birthday Treats You can bring treats for children (39 in each session) but no lollies or hard sweets please as these can be a choking hazard.

Final Information You will receive the dates of your home visit and a start date today. Just to reassure you, the home visit is not to see your home, but we do find that children settle in better if we have met them in their familiar home environment first. Please share with us information about your child; languages spoken, interests, home situation, sleeping, eating and medical issues.

The pack of information that you received needs to be filled in and returned to school before the summer holidays. The Welcome Booklet, which consolidates most of this information, is also in the pack. If there is anything else you need to know please ask.
