1 Informative Speeches

2 Informative Speeches…
Basically it is informing or giving information to someone about a particular subject. Ex) strangers needing directions, classmates making up missed assignments, etc.

3 The 6 Cs of Informative Speaking
Be Clear Be Concise Be Complete Be Correct Be Concrete Connect

4 Be Clear… Define important words or phrases.
Explain any technical terms to your audience. Use distinctions; compare and contrast

5 Be Concise Avoid redundancy
My uncle works for the Department of Health Department in Washington. These two are both alike. Use precise language- choose the word that best fits your meaning. If you mean oak, don’t say tree. ENLARGE your vocabulary.

6 Be Complete Raise certain expectations then satisfy them.
3 main points… Work from a plan. Outline!

7 Be Correct There is no substitute for being accurate.
Check and double check accuracy. Tell the audience where you found it. Using the name of a magazine, newspaper, movie, or television show is sufficient.

8 Be Concrete Be specific in your choices.
Don’t talk about candy when you can talk about Reece’s Pieces. Don’t just talk about soccer, talk about Mia Hamm. Concrete examples help listeners get mental pictures. Use specific facts, not generalities. Wrong- Some kids in NYC were caught stealing subway tokens. Right- Five high school students were caught stealing over $2500 in subway tokens.

9 Connect Engage your audience’s interest in your specific topic.
How? Analyze the people in your audience. How would you react if you heard your speech for the first time? What are your audience’s beliefs, interests, and attitudes? What do they already know about the subject?

10 Find a Subject! Personal experience Observations
