Robert Fulton Robert Fulton invented a steamboat that could move against the strong winds or currents. He launched the Clermont on the Hudson River in 1807.

The Clermont The steam engine turned two side paddle wheels, which pulled the boat through the water. It made the 300 mile trip from new york to Albany and back in a record of 62 hours. Helped with trade of goods through the Mississippi River.

Samuel F.B. Morse In 1837, Samuel F.B. Morse first demonstrated his telegraph. This machine sent long and short pulses of electricity along a wire. Telegraph lines spanned the country by 1861, bringing people closer as a nation
