There were many dangerous animals in the rain forests such as jaguars, crocodiles, bull sharks, and poisonous snakes. The Mayans avoided these but scavenged for forest foods such as deer, turkey, rabbits, and large rodents.

Also grew squash, beans, chili peppers, cocoa, cotton (for light cloth), and sisal (for heavy cloth and rope).

Source of obsidian, jade, and other precious metals such as cinnabar and hematite. These were used for trading and building mainly in the lowlands. The highlands also had many great rivers used for transportation.
