2 Southern Lowlands in Central America

3 Rain Forests There were many dangerous animals in the rain forests such as jaguars, crocodiles, bull sharks, and poisonous snakes. The Mayans avoided these but scavenged for forest foods such as deer, turkey, rabbits, and large rodents.

4 Northern Lowlands in Mexico

5 Used for Growing Crops Mayans grew maize (corn) primarily.
Also grew squash, beans, chili peppers, cocoa, cotton (for light cloth), and sisal (for heavy cloth and rope).

6 Volcanic Highlands

7 Many Precious Metals Source of obsidian, jade, and other precious metals such as cinnabar and hematite. These were used for trading and building mainly in the lowlands. The highlands also had many great rivers used for transportation. Obsidian Cinnabar Jade Hematite
