And the Age of Revolutions
Age of Metternich And the Age of Revolutions

This period is often called the “Age of Metternich” because the Austrian statesman was the dominant figure in European political affairs. Metternich aimed to maintain the peace and keep the Old Order in power in the post-Napoleonic period. He viewed the French Revolution and its doctrines of liberalism and nationalism dangerous to the position of the conservative Austrian Habsburgs and the whole European scene.

But the Old Order with its privileges based on birth had already been challenged by the French Revolution., which had proposed new concepts of society resting on opportunity and equality. Conservatives of the Metternich School held power throughout Europe from the Congress of Europe until the revolutions of 1848. The chief objective of the Metternich System was to suppress Revolutions and liberalism wherever they appeared.

However, spreading industrialization and a rising mass society indoctrinated with livery, equality, and fraternity could not be contained in a subject position. In spite of the effort of conservatives at the Congress of Vienna in 1815 to repress nationalism and liberalism, the spirit of a new order had been implanted in the minds of the masses and could not be suppressed for long.
