2 Meaning of Nationalism The general meaning of Nationalism is affection of a person with his /her Nation. With this affection a person becomes ready to sacrifice every thing even his life for the country. As a result of this feeling there was the rise of Nation states like modern Germony, Itely, France and Great Britain in Europe.

3 There are many causes for the rise of Nationalism in Europe like (1) Administrative reforms brought by Napolean Bonaparte.(2) Democratic Ideals of the French revolution of 1789.( 3) The rise of new social groups like Labour class and Middle class as a result of Industrial revolution in Europe.

4 Meaning of Liberal Nationalism. Liberal Nationalism includes following features 1. For the new middle classes labourism stood for freedom for the individual and equality of all before the law. 2. Politically it emphasised the concept of the Government by consent.(End of autocracy and clerical privileges, a constitution and representative government through Parliament and right to property. 3. In economic sphere liberalism stood for the freedom of markets and the abolition of state – imposed restrictions on the movement of goods and capital.

5 The rise of a new Conservatism after 1815 In 1815 representative of the European powers - Britain, Russia, Prussia and Austria who had collectively defeated Napoleon mate at Vienna to draw up a settlement for Europe which resulted the rise new conservatism in Europe. They signed the treaty of Vienna of 1815 under the chairmanship of Duke Metternich, Austrian chancellor. As a result of this treaty – 1. All the changes brought up by Napolean were undone. The Bourbon dynasty was ones again installed in France and all the territories annexed by Napolian were taken away.

6 2. A number new states were setup on the boundaries of France to prevent French expansion in future. 3. But the Germon confederation of 39 states that had been set up by Napolean was left untouched. The main intention was to restore monarchies that had been over thrown by Napolean and creater new conservative order in Europe.
