1 Gender Inequality

2 Cracking the Glass Ceiling
What keeps women from reaching the top in careers? Men steer women into other paths – public relations and human resources. Women lack mentors – successful executives that teach them the ropes

3

4 Cracking the Glass Ceiling
The glass is cracking! Highly motivated Have fierce competitive spirit Willing to give up sleep and recreation for career achievement Learn to play “men’s rules” Today there are a few women who are running these companies because of these characteristics and 30 years experience

5

6 Sexual Harassment Sexual harassment  unwelcome sexual attention at work or at school, which may affect a person’s job or school performance or create a hostile environment. Not recognized as an issue until 1970s Until these rules and attention; women dealt with it internally. Mostly done by men however, not that women can have positions of authority it can happen by females.

7

8 Sexual Harassment Definition used to include sexual desire as a motivator. Today this is not part of it. Ex. Homosexual slurs by a heterosexual can be considered sexual harassment. Information on sexual harassment is constantly changing and so are the requirements in the workplace. Military critical thinking section. Page 320

9 Violence against women
Being raped is a common fear for US women. Rate .59 per 1000 women. 1 out of every 1000 women ages are raped each year. Safer than 20 years ago where it was most of the time unreported Women are mostly afraid of being raped by a stranger and the reality is its usually someone they know.

11 Violence against women
Date rape  very common % of 1,000,000 (1/4) Only 5% report the crime to the police Embarrassment, family, friends, guilt for poor decision, or not sure if it was serious or not. Would you feel responsible if you went to a friend’s apartment and he hit you in the head with a shovel?

12 Violence against women
Murder  Men are more likely to be killers all over the world and women are less likely than other to be the males to be the victims

13 Violence against women
In the home  women more likely to be subject to spouse battering, marital rape, and incest along with honor killings and female circumcision. These issues are however, being brought to the public’s attention and being discussed in schools and trying to change the role of women in society

14 Women in Politics There are 8 million more women in the US at voting age; more women than men vote…but men out number women in political careers. Why are women underrepresented in politics? Still low numbers in feeder careers of law and business. Irregular hours make it difficult to have a family at the same time (children). Men do not feel this conflict as strongly. Women do not have the supportive network from a male spouse…childcare, and encouragement. They are not presented as valuable candidates by males.

15 Women in Politics Roles are changing.
Nancy Pelosi First woman minority leader and Speaker of the House. Hillary Clinton candidate for President. Sarah Palin running mate for McCain More women are entering law, and business Family values of the role of the male and female in childrearing as a partnership.
