Dyslexia Services

5 addresses the five components of effective reading instruction identified by the National Reading Panel's research and is a comprehensive Tier III intervention for students with dyslexia. Phonemic Awareness - follows established procedures for explicitly teaching the relationships between speech-sound production and spelling- sound patterns  Phonics - provides a systematic approach for single word decoding Fluency - uses research-proven directed practice in repeated reading of words, phrases and passages to help students read texts more fluently Vocabulary - features multiple word learning strategies (definitional, structural, contextual) and explicit teaching techniques with application in text  Reading Comprehension - teaches students to explicitly use and articulate multiple comprehension strategies (i.e., cooperative learning, story structure, question generation and answering, summarization and comprehension monitoring) Multisensory Reading For students newly identified Or Still needing to complete a Dyslexia Therapy program Still needing to work on decoding strategies

6 Developing Metacognitive Skills
For: Program description Students who have completed or nearly completed a Dyslexia Therapy program Strong decoding skills Still needs work on comprehension and vocabulary skills  builds the foundational skills for comprehension  incorporates research-based strategies to help develop vocabulary  Teaches students to think about their thinking before, while, and after they read reinforces decoding and fluency

7  Student is in general education classes with no daily support from Dyslexia Therapist.
504 Accommodations are in place Therapist is available to student as needed for tutoring or accommodation assistance. Grades, and accommodation usage will be monitored by Dyslexia Therapist. Dyslexia Therapist will meet with student as determined by grade reports and teacher requests MONITORING For: Students who have completed a Dyslexia Therapy program, or have been dismissed from the program.

9 Accommodations: What are they?
“Levels the playing field” Makes learning accessible to the student Allows the student to demonstrate what they know Are determined based upon student need Use of accommodations helps the student demonstrate their progress in grade level curriculum

10 Accommodations: What aren’t they?
Does not alter the content of assignments Does not alter what the student is expected to learn. Does not give the student an unfair advantage Does not change what a test measures Does not guarantee an ‘A’, or a passing grade
