1 MLA Format: Citations Works Cited Rand, Ayn. Anthem. New York: Signet, Print. Valenzuela, Louisa. “The Censors.” Elements of Literature. Austin: Holt, Rinehart and Winston, Print.

2 In-text or Parenthetical Citations
Quotation: The protagonist displays cowardice when he reasons, “But they would follow me until they found me” (Tellez 21). Paraphrase: Tellez confirms the protagonist is a coward using internal dialogue as the barber considers murdering Captain Torres (21).

3 Punctuation for In-text Citations
A period at the end of the sentence, after the citation, shows that the sentence is incomplete and inaccurate without it. Exception: The barber questions his moral dilemma: “No one deserves to have someone else make the sacrifice of becoming a murderer. What do you gain by it?” (Tellez 21).

4 Placement for In-text Citation
First, the protagonist focuses on Torres’ Adam’s apple. Then, he questions whether or not the captain deserves to be murdered. Finally, the barber dwells on the possible consequences of killing the man (Tellez 21).

5 How do I cite a website? The Works Cited page must include all pertinent information about the publication. The in-text citation acts as a flag for the reader to go look at the Works Cited page. The in-text citation will simply be: Author’s last name, or Article name or keyword, or Website name, whichever occurs first on the WCP (Probably no line, paragraph, or page number)

6 Example of a Website Citation
Works Cited “About the Ronald McDonald House.” n.p., n.d., Web. 07 April < Your in-text citation might look like this: … (“About the Ronald McDonald House”). Or … (About). Or … (About the Ronald).

7 Need More Information? Must have citations for interviews, magazine articles, anthologies, speeches, audio recordings, graphics, photographs, etc. Resources: Media Center page on HSHS website owl.english.purdue.edu

8 A comment on analysis: “ Open rooms everywhere… An open tomb.”
“The stars were but sparks of an immense conflagration.” “They pass me by, like beaten dogs.” “Monday went by like a small summer cloud.”
