Presentation on theme: "Watch the video and complete the following tasks on your post-it note."— Presentation transcript:

1 Watch the video and complete the following tasks on your post-it note.
Write down as many facts as you can on cells. Write down what you think today's lesson objectives are. 3 minutes

2 My learning outcomes are to…
TO DESCRIBE the features of an animal and plant cell. TO EXPLAIN the differences between animal and plant cells. I will show success by… Draw a diagram of an animal and plant cell. Describe the functions of each cellular component Explain why each component in a cell is vital Compare the differences between animal and plant cells

3 What are all living things made up of?
Cells are the smallest part of all living things. All organisms (living things) are made up of cells. CELLS Cells do the jobs that keep organisms alive. Cells are like tiny building blocks.

4 Cells form tissue Tissue forms organs Organs form organ systems Organ systems

5 Nucleus Cytoplasm Cell Membrane Mitochondria
You have 60 seconds to look at the diagram of the animal cell above and remember as much of it as possible. 1 minute

6 Cell Membrane Cell Wall Vacuole Nucleus Chloroplast
You have 60 seconds to look at the diagram of the animal cell above and remember as much of it as possible. 1 minute

7 Carry out the practical: Draw pictures of your observations,
Use a cotton bud to scrape the inside of your cheek a few times Wipe the cotton bud across the slide surface. Carefully apply two drops of methylene blue stain to improve the visibility of the cells. 7 minutes Carry out the practical: Draw pictures of your observations, making sure you label any parts of the cells that you see.

8 Carry out the practical: Draw pictures of your observations,
Use your finger nails to peel a small layer of onion skin from the piece of onion Place the onion skin on the slide surface. Carefully apply two drops iodine to improve the visibility of the cells. 7 minutes Carry out the practical: Draw pictures of your observations, making sure you label any parts of the cells that you see.

9 The nucleus controls the activities of the cell by sending instructions to the cytoplasm. It contains DNA The cell contents ire all held together by the cell surface membrane. Cytoplasm is a jelly like fluid in which most of the cells chemical reactions take place.

10 energy oxygen glucose carbon dioxide water
Mitochondria are the site of respiration, making energy for cells. Some cells have several thousands of Mitochondria Mitochondria provide the chemical energy for all cell functions energy oxygen glucose carbon dioxide water

11 The rigid cell wall in plant cells is made of cellulose and gives the cell membrane and contents extra support It gives plants their rigidity - their stable 3D structure. The large vacuole in plant cells contains cell sap, a dilute solution of salts and sugars.

12 Chloroplast are the site of food production.
Chloroplasts produce food for plants. They contain a green substance called chlorophyll, this absorbs light energy for photosynthesis. light energy carbon dioxide + water glucose + oxygen chlorophyll Chloroplast are the site of food production.

13 What have you learnt in today’s lesson?

14 Draw a bingo grid, like the one below and fill it with 9 words from the list below:
(It doesn’t matter where you put each word in the grid) WORDS: Nucleus, Cytoplasm, Cell Membrane, Chloroplast, Cell Wall, Vacuole, Microscope, Magnify, Growth, Organs, tissue, Plant cell, animal cell.

15 On each of the cards write down one word that you will be not be able to say when describing the different cell components. Mix up the cards and take it in turns to describe and guess.
