1 OLD and NEW Studio Art 1

2 First Fifteen What are some current events happening now? It can be in the US or anywhere else around the world. Which one concerns you the most, why? Draw at least two images, it can be symbols or a composition, which represents the one current event that concerns you.

3 Agenda: ONE Introduce lesson via powerpoint Start on research portion
Challenge Research Things to think about Sumi-e painting Process Start on research portion

4 Create a painting that depicts a current event that concerns you.
Challenge: Create a painting that depicts a current event that concerns you. Process: You will research and record Sumi-e painting and use one of the four gentleman subjects to create a background for your painting. Then you will research and record your current event and use gouache paint to depict imagery on top of your ink wash painting.

5 Research You will research a current event that concerns you. It can be anything you are interested in, for example: a scientific breakthrough, how circus animals are being treated or the aftermath of a natural disaster on a country. You will then research Sumi-e painting and more in depth of the four subjects called The Four Gentleman. The whole process of ink wash painting is packed of meaning, have fun and record everything you find interesting. Record EVERYTHING into your sketchbook. A handout with criteria will be provided.

6 Things to think about: Color and Principles of design Translation
Color is a big element in this painting. You will be using a hybrid of transparent and opaque color to transcribe meaning. Translation You are combining a ink wash painting with your own imagery. In the planning stages you need to think about how both with support one another visually, the viewer should be able to get a sense of what you are trying to express. Composition How to crop the painting/how to add in the gouache painting. Perspective and space as well as proportion and size.

7 Sumi-e Painting “The goal of ink and wash painting is not simply to reproduce the appearance of the subject, but to capture its soul.” Sumi-e is the Japanese word for black ink painting. It’s a East Asian type of painting that has its roots in China, mostly practiced by highly educated men. A technique of painting that focused on tone and shade, mainly, as well as texture, form and meaning. A round brush made of bamboo and animal hair is used to vary ink density of ink that was traditionally made with an ink stick and ink stone. The main supplies needed for an ink wash painting is called The Four Treasures. It consists of: ink stick, ink stone, brush and paper or silk. Artists study this style for years just to master fearless and intentional but simple strokes. How permanent and long lasting a stroke is, is emphasized in this art form.

11 Artists “A great painting was judged on three elements: the calligraphy strokes, the words of the poetry (often with double meanings and subtle puns) and the ability of the painting strokes to capture the spirit (Ch’i) of nature rather than a photographic likeness.” Sesshū Tōyō Lanscape Ink and light color on paper Hasegawa Tōhaku Pine Trees, early 16th century (top: left side; bottom: right side); deemed a national treasure

13 Process Find an article(s) you and refer to for your current event.
Example: Brief summary: Low levels of pesticides can impact the foraging behaviour of bumblebees on wildflowers, changing their floral preferences and hindering their ability to learn the skills needed to extract nectar and pollen. After research on sumi-e painting and the four gentleman, choose at least one to depict in your painting. If there are other elements you want to depict that you found during research you may do so; like rocks or pine trees.

14 Process You will be given a sheet of 16x20 inch watercolor paper, using tape size it down to fit the proportions of the ink wash painting you chose and stain it with a light watercolor wash. You are layering the wash, as they would have traditionally have done, so no need to make the wash pigmented. First wash Second wash

15 Process TAKING YOUR TIME! And after the media study and exercises do your ink wash painting FIRST! Then go in and draw your gouache and paint. I used the space outside of the tape as a tester space. After you’re done you will cut where the tape is and you’re finished! Video of how ink wash painting is done.

16 Agenda: TWO Demonstration on sumi-e painting (hopefully/ideally a guest artist) More time to conduct research; make sure to record your research according to the handout.

17 Planning Questions: answer and sketch
First Fifteen and a little more Planning Questions: answer and sketch What image(s) sum up your current event? Add on to your First Fifteen activity from last class. What color scheme would harmonize well with your sumi-e painting? Create color swatches. Think about perspective, size, proportion, and space. How can you play with these elements to better your composition?

18 Agenda: THREE RESEARCH IS DUE! Planning questions
Media study and sumi-e painting exercise

19 Media Study and Exercise:
Practice making different tones and shades, try something from the packets available. With the piece of watercolor paper given practice painting your sumi-e portion of your painting.

20 First Fifteen Think back to your gouache lesson. We talked about a variety of artists but focused mainly on artist John Singer Sargent and his use of watercolor and gouache together. Think about how you could successfully use gouache in your painting. If you want to use it to look more transparent like watercolor or more opaque like acrylic or if you want to paint to make it look like you painting with oil, like John Singer Sargent did.

21 Agenda: FOUR Gouache review Media study John Singer Sargent exercise
Do mid-process evaluation and turn sketchbook in

22 GOUACHE: review Gouache is said to be a mix between watercolor and acrylic, many refer to it as a more opaque watercolor. Its like acrylic because it dries fast and is very vibrant in color. It is like watercolor because its medium is water, it acts most like watercolor and can be reactivated with water. It is like oil because it can mimic how oil looks like. Gouache techniques are mostly similar to watercolor techniques, they include: Dabbing, Scraping, Dry Brush, Wet on wet, Layering, Sponging, Mid Tone, Tiling, Grisaille.

23 John Singer Sargent Siesta Stream with Rocks 1905 1907
He mixed a lot of watercolor and gouache together to make it look like he used oil paint. He used this mixture a lot with he didn’t have to do fine details. Siesta 1905 Watercolor, gouache, pencil Stream with Rocks 1907 Watercolor, gouache, pencil

24 Media Study and Exercise:
Review and practice techniques. Do an observational painting in your sketchbook in the style of John Singer Sargent, using pencil, watercolor (optional), and gouache.

25 First Fifteen According to your research and after experience with the media, what are your thoughts on East Asian ink wash painting (Sumi-e painting)? As you should know this art took many years to master and it was more about the process and the artist than the product, does that affect your thinking at all? Write at lease a paragraph about your thoughts.

26 Agenda: FIVE Stain final paper, remember in layers!
Meet with me to get the a-okay! If there is any exercises or media study you didn’t finish or want to continue to play with, do so; I would suggest practicing sumi-e painting more.

27 Agenda: SIX Tape paper according to the desired canvas size.
GET TO WORK! Studio day.

28 Agenda: SEVEN Peer critiques, if you feel you need it.
GET TO WORK! Studio day; you should be on the gouache portion today, almost finished by the end of the day.

29 Agenda: EIGHT Finish painting if you aren’t already finished.
If you are finished, cut your paper. Fill out the self assessment and answer the reflection questions in your sketchbook.

30 Reflection Statement How was this whole experience?
Write in COMPLETE sentences and I would like well thought out answers. How was this whole experience? With using two different paint media How was both of them separately and together? How does your painting reflect the current event you chose to depict? What do you like about your painting and what would you go back and touch up on?
