No prior knowledge is required, so you don’t need to have done GCSE Media, though the course will build on the skills developed from that.

9 AS/A Level 1. Foundation Portfolio in Media – a preliminary task (police interview) and the opening 2 minutes of a fiction film. 2. Key Media Concepts (TV Drama) – a) one question on an extract from a British TV drama looking at textual analysis and representation. b) one question about institution and audience in film. 3. Advanced Portfolio in Media – a development of skills from AS, using a combination of two or more media and showing research, planning and evaluation in two or more forms. 4. Critical Perspectives in Media a) describe and evaluate own skills development. b) discussion of a contemporary media issue from a given choice.

10 Foundation Portfolio in Media
1 preliminary video exercise – showing evidence of planning and pre-production. 1 main piece, which will be a fully realised production. Each piece must be in the same media. An evaluation in the form of a presentation, blog, website, podcast or DVD extras. You will get the opportunity to work in different media at A Level.

11 Key Media Concepts – TV Drama
The exam will consist of an unseen extract from a British TV Drama. The question will focus on: Textual Analysis and Representation: camera shots, angle, movement and composition editing sound mise-en-scene Section B will focus on: Institutions and Audiences in Film: production distribution marketing exchange/exhibition audience reception and consumption

12 Advanced Portfolio in Media
Two or more from a choice of: video, print, web based: A media portfolio to include main and accompanying texts. An evaluation in the form of a presentation, blog, website, podcast or DVD extras. Set briefs: a promotion package for the release of an album, a promotion package for a new film, a promotion package for a new soap opera, a website for a new TV channel, a short film.

13 Critical Perspectives in Media
Theoretical evaluation of production: Q1a) the focus is on skills development in one or two specific areas, from a choice of: digital technology creativity research and planning post-production using conventions from real media texts. Q1b) evaluation of one production relating to one of: genre, narrative, representation, audience, media language Contemporary Media Issues. One question focusing on one of: media and collective identity media in the online age ‘we media’ and democracy
