2 About Mrs.Gomez My name is María Sol Gómez and this is my 14th. year as a Bilingual Teacher. I was born in Quito, Ecuador. I am pursuing a Master in Educational Leadership for Linguistically Diverse Learner at the University of St. Thomas. I graduated from Lamar University with a BS in Communications and worked in news for 7 years before I became a teacher. My family consists of my husband Pablo and my children, Domenica (14) and Martin (10). I love what I do and it’s a privilege to have your child in my class!

3 About Mrs.Stilkenboom This is my 15th year of teaching and my 10th year teaching 1st grade. I was born and raised in Houston, Texas! I graduated from Baylor University. I have one daughter that is 15 years old. I speak English, Spanish and a bit of German and French. I love exposing students to new cultures and traditions.

4 School Hours 8:00 a.m. – 3:10 p.m. Students may arrive at 7:15 a.m.
Students enter classrooms at 7:50 a.m. Tardy bell rings at 8:00 a.m. (a student entering the building any time after 8:00 a.m. will be counted tardy – parents must sign student in at the front desk) More than 3 tardies will constitute an absence for the perfect attendance award.

Anyone other than the legal parent/guardian MUST be indicated on the emergency card in order to pick up a child or eat lunch with them. Changes in dismissal procedures require a written note from the parent/guardian. Notes should be given to the teacher first thing in the morning. Please DO NOT changes, as we check our at the end of the instructional day. If your mode of transportation changes after you have dropped your child off in the morning, please call the school and speak to the receptionist about the changes BY 2:00 p.m.

6 Drop Off Procedures Student Drop Off in front of building ONLY beginning at 7:15 a.m. No staff member will be available to assist students out of cars until 7:30 a.m. Please pull up as far as possible in the car rider drop – off lane. Staff members are present to assist students starting at 7:30 a.m. Do NOT drop students off in the parking lot. It is for their own safety.

7 Dismissal Procedures Car riders - You will need a sign posted in your windshield with your child’s name and grade on it (even returning students). Walkers/Bikers – Teachers will walk students to the end of the driveway. Parents will meet them at the marquee. On bad weather days students will automatically be car riders. Day Care – Please notify your child’s day care if he or she is absent from school. Please notify your child’s teacher if there is a change in your child’s day care arrangements. Bus riders – Contact Transportation if you have any questions.

8 Foods of Minimal Nutritional Value
- The Texas Department of Agriculture has created nutritional guidelines for Texas public schools. - We will have 3 authorized school parties: Winter Party, Valentine’s Party, and End of Year Party. Party money ($6.00) helps to cover the cost of games and party supplies. - Birthday treats may not be given during lunch. Store bought cupcakes or cookies will be allowed for student birthdays. The teacher will distribute treats to the students at the end of the school day. (No favors or balloons, please.)

9 Grades 3 Week progress reports and 9 Week Report Cards
Progress Indicators instead of numerical grades: S.D.- Steadily Developing - Student shows steady growth with reasonable support. • Student is developing instructional objectives for current grading period • Student requires occasional but appropriate reminders following instruction and practice • Student often refers to instructional resources after instruction (such as word wall, number lines, charts)

10 Grades, Continued N.S. – Needs Support - Student performs below expected level and needs support beyond the average learner. • Student struggles with instructional objectives for current grading period • Student requires frequent modeling and reminders following instruction and practice • Student seldom utilizes instructional resources unless reminded (such as word wall, number lines, charts)

Respect others. Keep your hands, feet and other objects to yourself. Raise your hand to get the teacher’s attention. 5. Show our best at all times.

14 Consequences I had a great day! (Gold Star) I had a good day!
I received a warning for my behavior and had a 5 minutes timeout in recess. I lost some privileges. My teacher contacted my parents and I lost more privileges.

19 Dual Language Reminders
Classes will start with their homeroom class everyday and change to their switch teacher for the afternoons. The Peek of the Week is available in English and Spanish. Homework and reading should be done in both languages. Spelling tests will consist of 12 words – 1 English Spelling Word, 5 English Sight Words, 3 Spanish Spelling Words, 3 Spanish Sight Words. The number of spelling words may increase later in the year. Dual language calendars, conduct sheets, homework sheets, Peeks of the Weeks, and other important documents will be available online under our teacher website. Report Cards will be in English and Spanish. In order to do our best for the students’ needs, procedures may change throughout the year. We will notify you if this occurs. Homework will start next week. Please check your child’s red folder on Mondays for the Peek of the Week, Monthly Math Calendar, and Homework Tablet. The Dual Language program is an advanced program, so the students will be expected to keep up with their daily homework to support their instruction in both languages.

20 Spelling Homework Spelling Homework : Your child may choose to complete any 1 activity per day. A total of 4 different activities should be done by Friday. Please use the words from the English & Spanish word lists from the Peek of the Week. Write all 12 words in alphabetical order three times each. Use the 4 spelling anchor words in English and Spanish to make 2 lists of rhyming words. Rainbow Writing: First, write all the words in pencil. Then pick 3 colors to trace all the words 3 times resulting in a rainbow. Choose at least 3 English words and at least 3 Spanish words to write sentences. Try to combine the words into as few sentences as possible. Free Choice Think of a creative activity to do with all 12 words. Write all the words with the vowels in red and the consonants in blue.

21 Math and Reading Homework
Math Homework: Your child should follow the monthly Math Problem Solving Calendar and solve the assigned daily math problem. Reading Homework: Read in English or Spanish (or both) for 15 minutes every day. HOMEWORK POLICY: All homework will be turned in completed on Fridays. Failure to turn in homework may result in a work habits mark.

22 Extra Resources Take Home Readers (Book Bags):
Your student will be receiving a take home reader appropriate to their reading level to practice at home. Please fill in the title, date, and initial each night it has been read. Return the book bag daily.

23 Odds and Ends Please read “Peek of the Week.”
No toys or rolling backpacks Label your child’s belongings (clothing, backpacks, lunches) Parents are encouraged to volunteer. Please fill out the “Criminal Background” form for volunteers located on the PISD website. It must be updated every year. This will help if you wish to be a field trip volunteer or come in to volunteer!

24 Field Trip Our 1st grade field trip will be to the Houston Zoo on October 19, 2017. If you would like to help chaperone, please be go to the Pearland ISD website, click on Parents tab, then Volunteer/Chaperone on the left column to complete your background check. More details to come!
