Industrialization The Agricultural Revolution occurred when new ways of farming and farm machinery were used to produce crops. FACTORY SYSTEM & INDUSTRIALIZATION • Textile factories began first in Great Britain & then the United States. • Resulted in factory system & mass production of goods. • Caused rural to urban migration (moving from farms to cities) • Workers began to desire a change from laissez faire capitalism (government is not involved in economy) to socialism (government controls economy) • Labor unions (organized workers) demanded reform laws. What was the enclosure movement? Land owners fenced in farm lands causing workers to move to cities to look for jobs. Steam engines improved transportation

Industrialism--A wealth gap was created between industrialized and non-industrialized nations. Industrialized nations needed raw material and new markets to sell finished products.

Why did they want to imperialize?
The Industrial Revolution sparked Industrialized nations to look for new lands to colonize Industrial nations wanted to imperialize for four reasons: 1 They needed markets to sell the goods that were pouring out of their factories 2 They needed access to raw materials to keep their factories running 3 Nationalism- Drive to make your country better "We’re #1!!" 4 Belief in Western Superiority

Darwinism (belief that the strongest or fittest should survive and flourish in society, while the weak and unfit should be allowed to die) • Duty of Western powers to take their superior culture to the lesser nations.

became the anthem for imperialism. It is the duty of Western powers to take their superior culture to lesser nations, despite the resistance they might encounter.

Industrialized countries had ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY that weaker nations did not have. guns railroads Steamships technology African & Asian countries didn’t have the advanced technology, making them easy (weak) targets
