1 Tools of Persuasion

2 There are three main reasons authors write. Round robin these reasons.
Authors may write to…. Persuade Inform or Entertain

3 When authors persuade you, they are trying to get you to do something
When authors persuade you, they are trying to get you to do something. What are some things an author may try to get you to do?

4 Authors may persuade you to….
Buy something (commercials) Believe something Vote one way

5 There are 7 different techniques an author may use to persuade you to do something. These are called “Tools of Persuasion.”

6 Name Calling Points out the negative so another product seems better
Says “Other Mascaras Fall Short” tells readers to try Maybelline. Says “Other Mascaras Fall Short” tells readers to try Maybelline.

7 Endorsement Uses Julian Hough to promote proactive. Using celebrities or experts to help influence your decision Uses Jullian Hough (sp) to promote proactive.

8 Repetition Repeats the information so you can remember it

9 Air and Rebut the Other Side’s Point of View
Tells the other side’s point of view and why it is wrong I believe kids should study everyday. My opponent says kids should spend all day watching television and playing video games. If kids don't study, how will they ever learn? Progressive tells the other’s prices, and then tells you why to go with them. Progressive tells the other sides prices then tells you why to go with them.

10 Gatorade has a lot of vitamins and minerals.
Association Presenting a positive image or idea to try and make you feel the same way about something else. We want students to grow up to be thin, happy, and healthy. Candy machines are not good. Gatorade has a lot of vitamins and minerals. I don’t know what to tell them about this one…..

11 Stereotype Uses unfair images of a group to make a point
All straight A students are nerds. Girls like to play with dolls is a stereotype. Girls like to play with dolls is a stereotype.

12 Bandwagon Suggests that mostly everyone else is doing it
Everyone is wearing “Shape-ups” so you should buy them. Buy me a cell phone, Mom. Everyone else in the 5th grade has one. Everyone is wearing “Shape-ups” so you should buy them.
