4. Autumn classroom experience
‘The seventeen-day autumn classroom experience (ACE) is designed to build upon [trainees’] pre-course days in school and to help [them] prepare for [their] assessed placements, through exploring and engaging in various aspects of primary education.’

6. ACE tasks & activities
ACE Tasks 1- 4 and 6- 9 must be submitted ( ) as part of the trainee’s Curriculum, Pedagogy and Learning module.
ACE activities are NOT to be submitted but remain very important as they begin to give the trainee very valuable information about the role of the teacher.

7. ACE task 6 SEN/D – to be submitted
With the other trainees, talk to the school SENCo about the school’s approach to SEN/D & read the school’s SEN/D policy.
Make a note of the in-class strategies to support the learning of pupils identified as having SEN or a disability, attend any intervention sessions they attend &, as directed by the class teacher, support their learning in groups or 1:1.

8. ACE task 6 continued
Plan an activity each day to support one child or a small group of children identified as having SEN/D. Share your planning with another trainee or a member of staff at the school, e.g. class teacher. After leading the activity ask for feedback from the other trainee( where applicable) or from the CT or TA. Reflect together on the success of the activity in relation to the child or children’s progress.
Identify and record a personal target with reference to SEN/D. Be prepared to discuss progress towards this target with your personal supervisor and/or tutor.

These tasks are outlined in ACE Task 5. We recommend that every trainee be encouraged to use these requirements as a guideline, with schools & trainees considering these a ‘minimum’ outline only.

‘I think the ACE days have worked well; it has given the students an introduction to teaching in school. There has been less pressure on the trainees to carry out lessons whilst being able to familiarise themselves with school policies and procedure and good practice.’

‘The strong integration of university- and school-based training ensures that all trainees make good progress overall across the different courses and training routes.’

14. Changes from last year
The format of the ACE Handbook has changed as a result of the feedback received from the trainees last year. The handbook should be easier to understand and the trainees will choose when to carry out their ACE tasks and activities over the duration of the period.

16. Observation visits
‘During the final ACE week, [trainees] will spend five days in [their] base school, and a 20-minute formative observation will be carried out of [their] teaching. The observation is designed to provide feedback, and targets for [them] to take forward into [their] spring placement.’ (p.3)
Visits for core PGCE trainees will be carried out by the PATs and by academic staff from the PGCE programme.

ACE observations for School Direct trainees should be carried out by their school or alliance.
PATs will carry out a short QA visit to see each School Direct trainee in the autumn or early January.

23. Teaching & Professional Development Profile (T&PDP)
In addition to completion of the ACE handbook,
‘… part 2a of the Teaching and Professional Development Profile (T&PDP) should be used as a record of [their] progress during the ACE days of the autumn term and should be used by [them] to record [their] progress towards meeting the Teachers’ Standards.’

Split placement: 18 days in autumn term (8th November to 1st December 2017) followed by a return to the same classroom for 19 days in the summer term (4th -28th June 2018)
Paired placement in a base class
Autumn Placement:
orientation into teaching, with trainees working under guidance of class teacher and on directed tasks
no grades – feeds into ‘Child Study’ assignment
university PT will complete a ‘pop in’ to look at tasks
Summer Placement:
increasing teaching up to 50% by week 3 using school planning and guidance
key is flexibility according to trainees’ needs
