2. Declarative & Interrogative
Sentences have four purposes: they tell or make statements, ask questions, give commands or make requests, and show sudden or strong feeling. My favorite color is red. (This sentence is a statement.) What is your name? (This sentence is a question.) Please turn on the light. (This sentence is a requestor command.) What an exciting trip I had! (This sentence shows excitement.) Sentences have four different names, according to their purpose: declarative, interrogative, imperative, exclamatory. A declarative sentence makes a statement. It ends with a period. I am hungry. Spiders have eight legs. An interrogative sentence asks a question. It ends with a question mark. Are you hungry, too? How many legs do most insects have?
