2 Conflict Conflict – is any clash of ideas or interest.
Recognizing Conflict: the following signs can tell you that a conflict is occurring or that a conflict is about to occur. Disagreement – every conflict starts with a disagreement over an issue. Emotions – if you find that a disagreement is causing emotions, such as anger or jealousy, the disagreement is becoming a conflict. Other People’s Behavior – if the other person or people in a disagreement begin ignoring you, raising their voices, or crossing their arms, a conflict is happening.

3 Why Does Conflict Happen?
Resources- 2 or more people want the same thing but not all can have it. Values and Expectations- differences of what is important and how things should be done. Emotions- feelings of being hurt or angry at the behavior of others.

4 Conflicts at Home Conflicts with parents can happen because you disagree with their opinions or the rules they have for you. (expectations) Conflicts with Siblings can happen due to resources, attention, or responsibilities. Question: How do conflicts in the home affect everyone in the family?

5 Conflicts at School Some conflicts that can occur at school are:
Conflicts with peers – can be due to jealousy, teasing, and bullying. Competition with classmates – students often compete with one another in schoolwork and sports. Conflicts with Teachers or Other School Authorities – you may think a teacher is being too strict or unfair or a teacher may feel that you are causing trouble or not doing your best. Question: If you need help with a conflict at school, who can you ask for help?

6 Bullying Bullying is scaring or controlling another person by using threats or physical force. Bullies almost always pick on people who are younger, smaller, or weaker than they are. If a bully won’t leave you alone or any violence occurs, report the bully to an authority figure, such as a parent or teacher. Question: What should you do if you see some one being Bullied?

7 Communicating During Conflicts
Expressing Yourself- the way you choose to express your emotions during a conflict will often determine if the conflict is solved in a positive or negative way. Choose the right words- The words you choose are very important. The words should clearly describe how you feel in a way that is not hurtful, angry, or threatening.

8 Body Language Your body often tells others how you feel. Communication that is done by the body rather than words is called Body Language. Examples of Body Language: Facial Expressions (frowns or smiles) Gestures (finger pointing or shaking your fist) Posture (arms crossed or standing too close)

9 Listening When you listen to another person; Make eye contact
Don’t become distracted by things around you Keep your body relaxed and open Repeat to make sure you understand Do not interrupt (even if you disagree)

10 Negotiation, Compromise and Collaboration
Negotiation – is a discussion to reach a solution to a conflict. Compromise – is a solution in which each person gives up something to reach a solution that pleases everyone. Collaboration – is a solution to a conflict in which neither side has to give up anything to reach a solution that pleases everyone.

11 Getting Help for conflicts
Mediation – the process of using a mediator to solve a conflict. Mediator – an uninvolved person who helps solve a conflict between other people. A good mediator: Sets ground rules Keeps the conflict focused on finding a solution Does not take sides Listens carefully to both sides Asks questions Offers solutions Does not allow the conversation to become angry.
