The Renaissance began in Italy around 1300. Scholars began focusing on Ancient Greek and Roman literature and life. Scholars also began focusing on human achievement and the power of human reason.

With a new interest in the subjects like grammar, history, poetry, and philosophy, the humanities became the center of the Renaissance. Humanists are individuals who study the humanities. The Renaissance spread from Italy to Northern Europe as a result of trade and the Printing Press invented by Johannes Gutenberg.
