Welcome to Year 7 – The start of a 5 year Learning Journey
2
What does this journey look like?
Year 7 and 8 students will follow a curriculum of: English, Maths, Science, Computing, MFL, Technology, Humanities, Expressive Arts, PE, Music, Life Learning. Studying 25 lessons a week, 5 lessons a day. Booklet picked up as you arrived outlines what will be taught during year 7 and 8
3
A broad and balanced curriculum
The opportunity for the students to begin developing the knowledge and skills that will go on to be the foundations towards GCSE success.
4
Towards the end of Year 8, students will then select the options that they would like to study to GCSE. Year 9 is seen as the foundation year to GCSE’s where our focus is on embedding the skills and basic knowledge necessary to support achievement. Year 10 and 11 is were we apply the basic knowledge and skills to the in depth content that students need to learn and be able to apply. A curriculum that is broad and balanced to enable students to then make informed choices about which subjects they would like to study up to GCSE. Options chosen in year 8 to focus students and to avoid the nationally recognised dip in students progress during year 8 and 9.
5
6/5/2018 Education has Changed! Over the past few years education has seen the introduction of new, more challenging GCSE’s. Choosing their options during year 8 provides our students will more time to master the skills, develop and in depth understanding of the content and be able to apply it. Talk about the importance of recall and the ability to apply knowledge, no CA, 33 hours on average of exams compared to 13.
6
GCSE grades are also changing for A*- G to 9 - 1 for all subjects.
So… when we look at it, with the changes that have taken place in education, the challenge and the rigour that we now see, is the reason why secondary school is a 5 year journey. It can no longer be viewed as a KS3 and KS4 journey, but one journey that begins in year 7 that be build on year by year towards the end point in year 11.

Tracking Progress How will we track your child's to ensure they continue to make progress and how will we communicate that with you? All students arrive to Werneth with their KS2 Scores from their SATs, we use this information to calculate their likely outcomes at GCSE, we call this their ‘Grade to Beat’. This is the minimum we would expect them to be achieving if they are continuing to make good progress. What should progress look like? We will report this information with you each term via their school report. How will we track your child's to ensure they continue to make progress and how will we communicate that with you? It is key for us to understand the starting point for each individual and from that work towards achieving excellence for all. All students in all subjects will have ‘excellence’ demonstrated are supported and encouraged to achieve the best that they can towards that example. From what you child is producing and demonstrated in their lessons and their work and through assessments staff will track your child's progress.
