1 Ancient Athens

2 Initially, Athens was an aristocracy.
An aristocracy is a form of government in which the elite people of society rule. Athens will later change and develop a democracy, which means rule by the people. In a democracy people have the right to vote. However, only free, adult males could vote.

3 Life in the City Ancient Athens is known as the birthplace of Democracy. Athens was considered the seat of culture in Ancient Greece. (art, theater, religion).

4 Acropolis The Acropolis was a defensive structure located in Athens.

5 Athenian Men Free men, 18 and older had the right to vote.
Civil Rights- rights of people to receive fair treatment under the laws. Men were supposed to be responsible and take an active role in government. Thus, they had the right to vote.

6 Athenian Women Life for men and women in Athens was not the same.
Most girls did not attend school. Women rarely left the house. They were expected to be good wives and mothers, and to spin, weave, and sew.

7 Athens Each Greek polis or city-state had a patron god or a god who they believed protected their city. Festivals were held to celebrate their god and to pray to them in times of struggle. Athena was the patron goddess of Athens. She was the goddess of war and wisdom.

8 Athens Life was unfair in Ancient Athens because men had more rights than women. In addition, the elite people in society had more power than others. The democratic form of government brought more equality than what existed under the aristocracy. As time passes, there will be more equity.
