8 The 21st Century Education
The education and learning as we know it for the last 150 years is a 19th century invention (for industrial economy) Education and learning need to be rethought and re-engineered to serve the needs of people in the present century – the 21st century (for globalized economy) 21st century needs have been shaped by the 3 major changes that characterize the present time: technological advances globalization environmental changes

9 Tensions to overcome for 21st Century Education
Tension between local and global (people becoming world or global citizens without losing their roots) Tension between individual and universal (culture is becoming globalized) Tension between tradition and modernity (adapting change but not losing the past) Tension between long-term and short-term considerations (abundance of transient information and emotions that keeps the spotlight on immediate problems (Jacques Delors, et al. Learning: The Treasure Within)

22 Teaching and learning in the 21st century
While education is an ongoing process of developing knowledge and skills, it is also – perhaps primarily – an exceptional means of bringing about personal development and building relationships among individuals, groups and nations (Jacques Delors, et al. Learning: The Treassure Within) “We also plan on fortifying our efforts to discover and develop individuals that are rich in ‘honest character and humanitarianism’ traits that are the global standards of education.” (Dr Tae-Wan Kim, President, Korean Educational Development Institute) All approaches to redesign the educational processes must take into account the basic and agreed-upon values and concerns of the international community, such as human rights, tolerance, understanding, democracy, responsibility, universality, cultural identity, the search for peace, preservation of the environment, and sharing of knowledge. (The World Public Forum: Dialogue of Civilizations)
