1 Science for the Carpathians
Astrid Björnsen Gurung, MRI-Europe, Switzerland/Austria Jacek Kozak, Institute of Geography, Krakow, Poland Lubos Halada, Institute of Landscape Ecology, Slovakia Welcome Objectives: The Science for the Carpathians (S4C) initiative is a regional science network targeting at mountain research in the Carpathians. The side-event will provide first-hand information on the recent efforts of S4C to develop and foster research coordination and collaboration. Icebreaker (Introduction): Who is from science / practice / policy? Who is from the Carpathian mountains? Who is member of the S4C Steering Committee or closely connected (Yurii)? Who receives the S4C newsflash? ... Please enter your names in the list and let us know if you like to stay in touch! S4C Side Event at COP3 26 May 2011, Bratislava, Slovakia

The remaining 20 minutes are for your input and discussion! You are invited: to critically reflect on the science-policy interface, i.e. on how the S4C initiative could generate more benefits for the society, and to discuss possible steps towards effective implementation of the proposed Research Agenda.

10 S4C Objectives & Vision Develop research strategy
Promote applied research on GC in mountains Strengthen research capacity and enhance visibility Facilitate communication, coordination and cooperation Support sustainable development How to achieve these aims? Since its launch, the S4C initiative persued these objectives with two main activities: Strategic planning and Forum Carpaticum Important means: Active and committed scientists! (e.g. working groups = SSC members) Structure: Steering Committee of xx members.

2 Activities, communication and planning tools 3 Research Agenda for the Carpathians 4 Joint interests with the Carpathian Convention One major product of the conference, the Research Agenda for the Carpathians, is therefore a key document of and owned by the S4C research community. It represents a departure point for future activities that, without doubt, require the involvement of all: policy, practice and science.

22 2. Advocacy for Carpathian Research area
From agenda to action 2. Advocacy for Carpathian Research area 3. Funding for coordination & networking 4. Promote coordination and collaboration between national programs 5. 24 "There are moments and events, where science and politics must work together if they want to prevail at regional or global level. In the same way, preserving common goods and overcoming common concerns is both a scientific and political challenge. For us, this means that science will one day be held responsible for both, what we did and what we did not do.“ Bruno Messerli in: Challenges for Mountain Regions. Borsdorf et al. (eds.) 2010: 217. This takes us to the discussion: You are invited: to critically reflect on the science-policy interface, i.e. on how the S4C initiative could generate more benefits for the society, and to discuss possible steps towards effective implementation of the proposed Research Agenda. Carousell with posters:

25 Science - Policy - Society Discussion
Research Agenda for the Carpathians Towards an effective implementation Setting the stage How to promote a „Carpathian research area“? Other „policy means“ to support Carpathian research? 2) Funding Funding instruments for research implementation and coordination This takes us to the discussion (with focus on the research agenda): In broad, you are invited to critically reflect on the science-policy interface, i.e. on how the S4C initiative could generate more benefits for the society. To narrow down the discussion, we like to focus on the Research Agenda and discuss possible steps towards effective implementation, which includes 1) Establishing conducive frame conditions („Setting the stage“); 2) Funding; and 3) Communication. 5‘ for silent work to take notes (all participants) 10‘ carroussel on 3 topics moderated by 3x 1+1 S4C representatives using flip charts( 1 moderator, 1 assistant) Setting the stageModerator: Lubos HaladaSupport: Katalin Mazsa FundingModerator: Jacek KozakSupport: Bartlomiej Wyżga CommunicationModerator: Astrid BjörnsenSupport: Yurii Bihun 5‘ Summary (by moderators) and closing. Acknowledgments: 1) Participants of side event: Interest and contributions 2) ISCC-UNEP Team, in particular Harald Egerer, Veronika Hopfgartner enabling us to enter the dialogue with policy and who supported the print of the Research Agenda. 3) Communication How to promote S4C and the Research Agenda? (who, where, when, why and how?)
