with Miss Barry, Mrs Watkins and Mrs Kirby.
Welcome to Year 2 with Miss Barry, Mrs Watkins and Mrs Kirby. Stafford class teacher - Miss Barry Columbus class teachers - Mrs Watkins (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday) Mrs Kirby (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday) SJK

Key Routines In the morning, Year 2 children line up outside the covered corridor. Stafford next to the raised bed, Columbus next to the wall. At the end of the day, children are responsible for looking out for who is collecting them. To begin with they have to tell their teacher that they have spotted their adult. As we become confident that the children are being sensible they will go without informing their teacher. Please ensure that both your child and their class teacher knows of any change to who is collecting them at the end of the day. Children can change their books on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday. They do not need to change their books every day if they have not read them. We do not require book bags to be in school if they are not changing their books. SKJ

P.E. P.E. is on a Tuesday and a Thursday. Children should have kits in school all week. Outdoor and indoor PE kits are required. Children are not allowed to wear jewellery and should tie their hair back. Uniforms need to be labelled to avoid confusion. Please ensure trainers are comfortable for physical activity. SB

General Expectations We begin to develop their ability to work independently right from the start of the year. Children enjoy the extra Year 2 responsibility of collecting the registers. We therefore expect Year 2 children to be responsible for their belongings and come into school by themselves. Please ensure children have appropriate clothing for the weather. Children need a water bottle every day. KW

Behaviour Children begin each day under the sun.
Unacceptable behaviour = Warning Further unacceptable behaviour = Child moves name to the cloudy sun. If the unacceptable behaviour continues = Child moves name to the rain cloud. At this stage, children will have time out on a thinking spot. They will also lose 1 minute of Golden Time. Children will be able to earn their way back to the sun once they are placed under the cloudy sun. SJK

Curriculum In Year 2 we still follow a Creative Curriculum as the children have been used to in Year 1. There are fewer play-based activities. Within many of the lessons, the children will be expected to work independently at their tables unless they are part of a guided group. KW RE & PSHE only subjects not incorporated into our topics, have an RE day/ day and a half, each half term, same for PSHE -mindful of ability of children, we talk with current teachers to find out about them as children/their characters, as well as core subject standards, next steps, strengths -level of work won’t be a shock, want them to achieve and feel successful when working independently -still differentiate, anywhere between 2 and 5 ways, support also in other ways, word banks, talking tins, one instruction at a time, oral rehearsal of a sentence with teacher etc. -already used to working like this in year 1, just more of it in year 2 -do also still work in pairs, groups, lots of talk etc Please don’t worry about SATs – we don’t make a big deal about them, we gather evidence throughout the Summer term to level the children and the test are just one part of a puzzle.

Topics In Y2 the curriculum is organised through a ‘topic based’ approach which incorporates the key skills set out in the National Curriculum. Termly newsletters will give more detail about the topics and skills we are covering. Remember to look at our ‘This Week’ notice displayed in the corridor for information about your child’s learning. KW

Homework HOMEWORK - Children will be given homework on a Thursday and should be returned by Tuesday. There will be a balance of English and Maths homework. WEEKLY SPELLINGS – given out on a Thursday from October. The children will be tested on these in school on the following Wednesday. READING – Please try to hear your child read at least four times a week. Your child should be reading for at least 10 minutes. TERMLY HOMEWORK – Year 2 join in with Termly homeworks in the Summer Term. There are choices available to suit different learning styles. Work needs to be in by a specified date and their work is displayed during a walkaround. SJK

Show & Tell In Y2 there is still time available for the children to share their achievements and special family events. It is important that they know we are interested in their life outside school. Any learning relevant to the current topic is also valued. Children are not expected to bring something each week. Maybe try to encourage once a half term. KW Chance to be School Council in Yr 3
