2 Mary I ( ) Mary Tudor was the Catholic daughter of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon Mary married Philip II of Spain and organized her foreign policy around Spanish interests. Ended Calvinism in England and reverted back to her father’s Catholic practices Got the nickname “Bloody Mary” for killing protestants

3 Elizabeth I ( ) Mary’s successor was her half sister Elizabeth I She was much more of a “Politque” Repealed all of Mary’s anti- protestant laws She would finally establish the Anglican Church Was the authority on both spiritual and temporal matters

4 Religious Extremists Extremists on both sides would be dissatisfied with Elizabeth’s rule Jesuits and the Spanish directly helped Catholic extremists Tried to remove Elizabeth from the throne Radical Protestants were known as Puritans They wanted to purify the Anglican Church of leftover Catholic influences

5 Trouble with another Mary & Spain
A number of events would lead to conflict between England & Spain England would ally itself with France Elizabeth’s execution of Mary Stuart, “Queen of Scots”, would begin the war Mary had a better claim to the throne of England but was Catholic Scotland had converted to Calvinism, but Mary was Queen Elizabeth was forced to kill her after several treasonous plots

6 The Spanish Armada In 1587, Phillip II ordered the Spanish Armada to make ready for an invasion of England Attacks by Sir Francis Drake delayed the invasion 130 ships and over 25,000 men sailed for England Their defeat was the beginning of the end for the Spanish Empire
