1 A-C: AP mortise and lateral views of the right ankle show a subtle nondisplaced fracture of the lateral malleolus. The fracture is best seen on the mortise view. Fractures of the lateral malleolus can be oriented in the oblique coronal plane and be invisible on the AP view. A careful review of the lateral or mortise (if available) radiographs is necessary to diagnose such a fracture. Source: Chapter 10.
