1 Mrs. Canfield & Mrs. Schiele
Welcome to 3rd Grade Mrs. Canfield & Mrs. Schiele

2 Email-preferred method of Communication
Assignment Books Assignment books are available to purchase in the office. Your child will need 2 assignment books to last the entire school year. An adult must sign the assignment books nightly to indicate that the assignments listed have been checked & completed. If your child struggles with one of the assignments, please make a note in the comment section. Newsletters A classroom newsletter will be sent via on Monday. The newsletter will highlight what was taught throughout the previous week and highlight any important upcoming events. There are some exceptions to this. -preferred method of Communication

3 Holidays/Classroom Parties
Celebrations Birthdays We have a birthday book club in our classroom. Your child may donate an age appropriate book to our classroom library in honor of their special day. If they choose to do this, a label will be placed in the front of the book to remind others of their generosity for years to come. Please do NOT send in invitations unless the whole class is invited. Holidays/Classroom Parties There are sign up sheets available tonight if you’re interested in volunteering for our classroom parties. Please remember that in order to volunteer, you must have Protecting God’s Children and a BCI on file with the Diocese. Grandparent’s Day: Monday, October 2nd

4 Homework Homework is meant as a review and not an added stressor. It will be checked for completion only. I am asking you to check the homework for accuracy. If you find that your child does not understand a particular concept or experienced difficulty in completing an assignment, please let me know so that I can help them. Once students begin receiving math homework in their workbooks, the answers will be posted on Google Classroom to assist in checking work. Students are expected to practice math facts daily. It is expected that your child has already mastered their addition and subtraction facts. They will need to master their multiplication and division facts by the end of their grade. They can do this by completing various drill games/apps, or they can simply use flashcards or other homemade games. Remember, we are a team. The one-on-one attention that your child receives from you at home is invaluable. It will help reinforce the idea that everyone is involved, both teacher and parents, and that we all care about their success!

5 Google Classroom/Teacher Website
Google Classroom: is a place where class assignments or documents will be kept. Your child has been practicing using this over the past couple of weeks by marking assignments complete. Teacher Website: On the SPX website there are internet links that we use in the classroom, or that are possible to use at home. There are also study guides, vocabulary, newsletters, and weekly announcements. If we mention something can be found on our website, we are referring to our SPX website, not Google Classroom.

6 Required Assessments Students completed STAR testing last week in both Reading and Math. These assessments are computerized and taken at least 3 times a year (August/September, December, May). These tests provide me with valuable information and feedback to determine instruction. Students will be taking Terra Nova Achievement test in October. You may notice a drop in scores this year due to the independent nature of the test. In second grade the tests were read to the students, this is not the case in third grade. In third grade only the initial directions are read to the students. They are expected to read the remaining questions on their own.

7 Accelerated Reader (AR)
Students are expected to spend a minimum of 20 minutes each night reading. They will be given a reading log at the beginning of the week and expected to complete the log & turn it in on Friday. Students will be assigned a points goal each month. They earn points by reading books and taking AR tests on these books. This goal is an individual goal and based off of their STAR Reading Assessments. In addition to their points goal, they also have a comprehension goal of 85%. I will be conferencing with the students frequently to ensure that they are working towards meeting their goals. Be sure to sign up for home connect. This allows you to receive alerts when your child has completed a test. If you have already done this in prior years, you will not have to sign up for it again.

8 Accelerated Math (AM) AM is a program that is offered by the same company as AR. This program provides intervention or enrichment opportunities for students in math. Each student will be assigned objectives to complete based off of their STAR Math assessments. In some instances, students will have concepts that have not been taught. Because of this, there are built-in help features in the program. Students can watch a Kahn Academy video that teaches them how to do this new concept. These videos are also helpful for concepts taught that may have been forgotten, or not quite understood when they were taught. Students practice these objectives at home and then take a test over the objectives at school. Students have been assigned a goal of mastering 7 objectives each month at an 85% mastery level.

9 Blended Learning This year in math we will be doing blended learning. Students will be placed in groups based on their understanding of the concept. The groups will rotate between 4 stations. One station will be with the teacher, a second station will be working on the problem set for the day, and the third and fourth stations will be a computer station where the students will be working in a new program called i-Ready and Moby Max. These programs help the students work independently at their level. Why Blended Learning?: It provides the teacher with an opportunity to work in small groups and help target the instruction to meet more individual needs.

10 Standards Based Grading
Graded assignments & assessments will receive an E, M, W, or N. E-indicates your child is exceeding the essential standard M-indicates your child is consistently meeting the essential standard W-indicates your child is working towards the essential standard. They may meet the standard occasionally, but are not consistently meeting the standard without assistance. N-indicates your child is not yet meeting the essential standard. Graded work will be passed back on Monday. It will be located in your child’s pass back folder. You must sign the folder indicating that you have reviewed the work with your child, and return it on Tuesday. Re-takes (not make ups) will only be offered in math

11 Rewards Each month that your child meets both their AR & AM goals, they will receive a homework pass to be used at their convenience. Any child who meets both goals throughout the entire school year will earn a pizza party with me at the end of the school year. Monthly class reward for responsible behavior SCAAP-certificates are handed out prior to SCAAP Day.

12 Consequences Punch Cards Behavior Slips Detentions
Students will receive a punch card at the beginning of each month. The card has 12 possible punches on it. If they fill up the card (all 12 punches) within the month, they will be ineligible for SCAAP, the classroom reward, and receive a detention. Behaviors that warrant a punch would be such things as missing homework assignments, not obtaining a signature in their assignment books, behavior infractions that would have resulted in them turning their card in previous grades, behavior slips, detentions and losing their punch card. Behavior Slips Detentions
