1 FORESHADOWING A literary device in which the author drops subtle hints about what’s going to happen in the story/movie. Example: a.) dreams about fire b.) There is a fire at the end of the story.

2 FLASHBACK A literary device in which the author interrupts a scene to take you back to a past event. Example: a.) Forrest Gump b.) He has flashbacks to the Vietnam War.

3 SYMBOL A literary device used when a word, place, character, or object means something beyond what is literal. FOR EXAMPLE- A stop sign. What literary is it??? It is a metal octagon painted red with white streaks. What is its symbolic meaning? When you see it, you must STOP!

5 INFERENCE A reading strategy in which you draw conclusions based on what you already know from the text. Example: a.) Michelle grades papers. She is in a classroom Monday through Friday. She loves red pens and desk supplies. b.) We can infer that Michelle is a teacher.
