6 Unsustainable Course with Technology - Meat Industry
Terribly inefficient Hundreds of kilograms of grain -> 1 kilogram of cattle meat Even worse in poorer countries Harms environment on several fronts Tremendous resources to grow food for cattle Waste from animals produces methane Land must be cleared for pastures Population growth (especially in developing world) adds to problem Over half of pollution from developing world Lack of regulations -> environmental damage Environmental impact of the meat industry affects me because I need to try to be conscious of the sources and quantity of meat I eat

7 Unsustainable Course with Technology Air Pollution by motor vehicles
Air pollution affects society’s health and the environment A main source of air pollution is done by motor vehicles Manufacturing, refueling, and operating of vehicles contribute to pollution Hydrocarbons can cause respiratory problems Nitrogen oxide weakens immune systems Carbon monoxide creates a barrier in one’s system that blocks oxygen Toxic substances can cause cancer Carbon dioxide is a cause for climate change Nitrogen oxides cause “ground level ozone” and “particulate matter” Ground level ozone is a gas formed above the earth’s surface Particulate matter are hazardous particles Air pollution by motor vehicles affects me personally because I drive a car and must be conscious of how much I contribute to the problem

8 Unsustainable Course with Technology Electronic waste (E-waste)
E-waste is applied to electronic equipment that is near or at the end of its useful life. In many western countries cell phones, computers, TVs and other electronic appliances are the fastest growing waste stream. How? A new electronic comes out and we buy it, but we don't get rid of our older one correctly E-waste represent 2% of America's trash in landfills, but it equals 70% of toxic waste It is hard to recycle e-waste because they contain materials that render them hazardous, like: Lead: Causes brain damage in children. Mercury: Toxic in very low doses and causes brain and kidney damage.

9 Unsustainable course with technology-Chemical waste
Chemical waste is probably one of the most feared types of pollution. Accumulation can have disastrous side effects. Exponential demand for new technology and products increased production of non biodegradable materials Landfills getting bigger, soil polluted-plants, animals take up toxic particles. Greenhouse effect melting polar ice caps-coastlines flooding Release of noxious fumes and particles causing rare diseases in humans. Chernobyl,Bhopal,Fukushima-results of our actions. We may not even have a world to live in!!! -refernce link
