3 Cycling- Bihar initiative to mitigate CO2 emissions?
COP 22 Cycling- Bihar initiative to mitigate CO2 emissions? Motivating the public at large in Bihar to adopt cycle as their preferred conveyance mode for small distances in the cities and towns instead of using motor vehicles. Incentive and prize schemes have been launched since 2014 in the cities for promoting use of cycles. The State government also envisages distributing 1 lakh cycle to the citizens during this financial year. Using cycle we can reduce Kg CO2 emission per annum per cycle. Use of 1 lakh cycle will reduce tonnes of CO2 per annum. The rising numbers of youths population in Bihar with the success of our campaign, the growth of cycle users to a range of one hundred lakh over the next five years will lead to reduction of carbon emission by tonnes per annum.

4 Impact of PET bottles: CO2 Emission
COP 22 Impact of PET bottles: CO2 Emission Plastic bottles are a petroleum product and use 151 billion litres of oil to produce each year. That’s enough to run 500,000 automobiles per year. The water industry uses a further 2 billion litres of oil in distributing the water bottles around the world. 2,500,000 tonnes of a carbon dioxide was produced in the manufacturing of the plastic bottles each year. The production of 1 kg of polyethylene (PET) requires the equivalent of 2 kg of oil for energy and raw material. Burning 1 kg of oil creates about 3 kg of carbon dioxide i.e. per kg of plastic, about 6 kg carbon dioxide is created. Today, around 5% of the urban population of Bihar, approximately 1.65 million people use PET bottles per annum. It requires 9000 tonnes of plastic that leads to the emission of approx tonnes of CO2 per annum. If 90% of the urban population of Bihar will use PET bottles, approximately 29.7 million would be using PET bottles per annum. It requires tonnes of plastic that leads to the emission of approx tonnes of CO2 per annum.

5 Initiatives in Bihar to mitigate CO2 emissions
COP 22 Initiatives in Bihar to mitigate CO2 emissions The Department has banned the use of PET bottles in all official functions. The Department has also launched a public awareness campaign against the use of PET.   As Bihar is on rapid growth of economic development. An upward movement of society and migration of rural to urban areas, a PET free Bihar (that may appear far-fetched to many), today, around 5% of the urban population of Bihar, approximately 1.65 million people use PET bottles per annum. It requires 9000 tonnes of plastic that leads to the emission of approx tonnes of CO2 per annum which could be saved. State Govt. has launched incentivized Agroforestry & “Har Parisar-Hara Parisar” schemes to increase three cover beyond forest area and thereby creating carbon sink and the private lands.

6 The Bihar’s two pronged action plan-
COP 22 The Bihar’s two pronged action plan- Say Yes to CYCLING, And No to PET, A low investment, practical intervention in Bihar with mass participation towards mitigation of CO2 emissions
