1 Science Methods Service Project
Sarah Vadala Fall 2016

2 Who & Where Elwyn Development Center Typical Preschool Children
Ages 3-5

3 Parts of a Flower Lesson
Materials - The Tiny Seed (Eric Carle) - Large construction paper flower to label - Labels for large flower - Cut up fake flower pieces - Labeled cups for pieces - Parts of a Flower Song (youtube) Standards PK.A.5 Name basic parts of living things PK.A.3 Recognize that plants and animals grow and change.

4 Description Read The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle - Talked about how flower grew/changed throughout the story Watched parts of a flower video - Reviewed the parts of a flower using motions from the video Labeled cardboard cutout of flower - With assistance, the children placed the labels Sorted parts of a flower into cups

5 See for yourself!

6 Sink or Float Experiment
Materials: - Container - Water - Items that sink/float - Whiteboards Standards: PK.A.1: Sort and describe objects according to size, shape, color, and texture PK.A.9: Ask questions about objects, organisms, and events. • Participate in simple investigations to answer a question or to test a prediction. • Use the five senses and simple equipment to gather data.

7 Description Explained “sink” and “float” - Showed an object that sank and an object that floated Gave each child an item - Each child felt their item, talked about whether it was heavy or light, etc. Have the child make a prediction about their item and place their item on the “sink” or “float” whiteboard Drop items in/ Make observations Dry all items and have the children place them on sink or float based on the experiment

8 See for yourself!

9 Science in Motion (Balloon Rockets/ Go Cars!)
Balloon Rocket Materials - String (twine or something rounded) - Straws - Balloons - Two chairs - whiteboard Go Cars Materials - Matchbox cars -Wooden blocks

10 Science in Motion Standards PK.B.1 Explore and describe the motion of toys and objects PK.B.7 Participate in simple investigations of energy and motion to answer a question or to test a prediction.

11 Description Make predictions about which balloon will go farther on the string - A lot of air or a little bit of air? Tape Balloons and make observations/ check predictions Explain what a ramp is/ how height can affect speed. Have the children make their own ramps and predict whether their car will go fast or slow.

12 See for Yourself (Balloon Rockets)

13 See for Yourself (Go Cars)

14 Color Mixing Activity (primary, secondary, & tertiary colors)
Materials - Food coloring - Eye dropper - Clear cups/ plastic tray - Whiteboard - Coffee Filters - Primary color markers Standards 3.2 PK.A.3 Notice change in matter. 3.2 PK.A.6 Participate in simple investigations of matter to answer a question or to test a prediction.

15 Description Primary Colors - Explain these are basic colors
Secondary Colors - Explain these are colors made from mixing primary colors Tertiary Colors - Explain these are made by mixing primary and secondary colors Coffee Filter Color mixing - Using primary colors, have the children draw all over coffee filter then spray with water to show how the colors mix and make secondary colors.

19 Teacher Tips/ Suggestions
ALWAYS come prepared, have items ready before starting the experiment. Allow each child a chance to share their thoughts during the experiment Test experiments with materials you bought (Balloon Rockets) Have a simple back up activity planned (go cars)

20 Teacher Tips Continued
Encourage children to use the science words that are a part of your experiment. (prediction, hypothesis, etc) Think about ways you try and extend thinking. (color mixing activity) The kids loved when they got to take something home. Validate different opinions. Ask why they think what they think.
