LYRIC POETRY – poetry that expresses emotions METER – the repetition of a regular rhythm ARCHAIC LANGUAGE – consists of words that were commonly used in the past but are now considered out- of-date INVERTED SYNTAX – reversal of the expected order of words…like Yoda

For eight hundred years have I trained Jedi.” “Named must your fear be before banish it you can.” “Soon will I rest, yes, forever sleep. Earned it I have. Twilight is upon me, soon night must fall.”

IAMB – one metric foot of poetry containing two syllables – one unstressed and one stressed IAMBIC PENTAMETER – FIVE metric feet of poetry IAMBIC TETRAMETER – FOUR metric feet of poetry
