2 Vocabulary Immigrant- A person entering a country in order to live there permanently Refugee- A person who flees to another country due to danger in their own country Illegal Immigrant- A person entering a country unlawfully Asylum- A safe place or protection from arrest or punishment or persecution

3 Vocabulary Emigration- to permanently leave one country for another (E=Exit) Immigration- to enter a country in order to live there (I=In) Deport- to forcefully return a person to their native country

4 Vocabulary Ellis Island- An island in New York harbor used as an immigration center between 1892 and 1924 when over 16 million immigrants came to the United States. Emigrant- A person leaving a country in order to live somewhere else Citizen- a person who owes allegiance to the government and is entitled to government protection.

5 Writing prompt Imagine you’re a guard at Ellis Island. Your parents were immigrants. What do you think about the new immigrants you are guarding? Do you admire their courage or do you look down on them because they are poor, dirty and tired? Explain your response in a well written paragraph
