6 Department of Homeland Security –Created after Sept. 11, 2001 –Responsibility of preventing future attacks –Minimizing the effects of an attack if one should occur –Deals with the effects of natural disasters

7 Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) –Created after WWII –Federal agency charged with conducting espionage Spy and gather intelligence on foreign countries –Many activities deal with locating terrorists and uncovering terrorist plots

8 Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) –Enforces laws regarding firearms/explosives –Enforces laws dealing with the manufacturing, transportation, and distribution of alcohol and tobacco

9 Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) –Enforces laws against drug trafficking –The FBI has jurisdiction over federal drug cases –DEA pursues US drug investigations abroad

10 United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS) –Part of Department of Homeland Security –Enforces laws and administers procedures for dealing with immigration and foreign visitors

11 Internal Revenue Service (IRS) –Part of the Treasury Department –Collects citizens taxes –Authority to investigate and arrest those who evade paying federal taxes

12 Dealing with Disaster Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) –Part of Department of Homeland Security –Plans for and responds to natural disasters National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) –Investigates accidents involving modes of transportation

13 Health and Human Numbers Center for Disease Control (CDC) –Responds to the potential outbreak of serious diseases The US Census Bureau –US Census takes population count every 10 yrs. –Determines how many representatives each state has in the House of Representatives
