10 Software The IT Environment There are two basic types of software:
Operating system software Application software Application Software Operating System Hardware

11 Operating System Software
The IT Environment Operating System Software Some of the tasks that operating systems software performs include: Starting application software Supervises multiple applications running at the same time Manages the storage of programs, data and information Manages the various input and output devises Transfer of data, programs and information Allocates memory and processing time Provides basic security for users and to the system as a whole

12 Application Software The IT Environment
There are two types of application software: Off the shelf applications Custom applications

13 Programs and Programming
The IT Environment Programs and Programming The more common computer languages are: COBOL ForTran VB.NET C++ Java Also know as Visual Basic and primarily used for writing PC software Pronounced CEE Plus Plus and is used to write software for network servers and PCs Used for business software usually for mainframes Used for writing scientific and engineering software Network software and all other types of computers

14 Organisational Computing
