4 College Research Process
Step One: Develop (Summer before Junior Year) Step Two: Explore (Junior Year - Summer) Step Three: Define (Late Summer - September of Senior Year) Step Four: Finalize your list (No later than early October)

5 Step One: Develop Define and learn the different College Characteristics Determine what is important for you at college to be happy and successful- ‘must haves’ vs. ‘would be nice’ Consider academics, social atmosphere, financial affordability, admission criteria, sports and extracurricular activities available, etc. Family Considerations

6 Step Two: Explore Use college search tools such as:
Naviance’s ‘College Search’ tool Use the ‘College Explore’ sheet to take note and compare colleges by what is important to you. Meet with your counselor/ college and career center advisor Attend NACAC and local college fairs Attend High School Case Study Night Attend college rep visit at Miramonte College Tours Explore college websites LinkedIn - Explore where Alumni are working & in what field YoUniversityTV - videos of colleges to see atmosphere on and off campus College Navigator - Statistics and facts on each college College Board Big Future - Search each college and see majors, programs, sports, financial information, pictures, etc.

7 Step Three: Define Formalize list - no more than 15 colleges on list
Add all colleges on list to ‘College’s I’m thinking about’ on Naviance Rate interest in the college in the ‘College’s I’m thinking about’ tab

8 Step Four: Finalize the list If you answer no to any of the following questions, remove the college from the list: Review step one, does every college have meet your ‘must have’ criteria? Define the ‘why’ for each college on your list - if you can’t, cut it from your list. Are all colleges on the list financially do-able? Would you be happy attending this college, even if it’s a ‘safety’? Do you have more than 10 schools on your list? Do you have at least three ‘safety’, ‘likely’ and ‘reach’ schools? Can you submit all application on time without letting your grades drop?
