3 monolith (noun) Definition: large, narrow stone used as a monument or for religious purposes proclivity (noun) Definition: a strong natural liking for something that is usually bad : a tendency to do something that is usually bad Meg Fight Scene Sentence: In A Wrinkle in Time, Meg has a proclivity towards beating someone up if they insult her younger brother, Charles Wallace.

4 profane (verb/adj.) Sentence:
Meg feels like principal Jenkins has profaned her family when he suggests that she needs to “face facts” about her father never returning. Definition: -to treat (a holy place or object) with great disrespect - having or showing disrespect for religious things

5 proficient (adj.) Sentence:
Definition: good at doing something What are YOU proficient at??? Sentence: Meg’s mom and dad, Mr. and Mrs. Murry, are both proficient scientists and parents.

6 profound (adjective) Sentence:
Definition:   having or showing great knowledge or understanding : difficult to understand : requiring deep thought or wisdom : very strongly felt Meg and Father Sentence: Meg’s feelings for her father are so profound, that should would travel through space and time and battle evil creatures, just to find and save him.

7 profuse (adj.) Sentence:
Astrophysicist, Neil De Grasse Tyson, believes that the amount of stars and galaxies in our universe is profuse. Definition: given, produced, or existing in large amounts Neil de Grasse Tyson

8 retroflection (noun) Definition: the act or process of bending back Retroflection Sentence: The doctor had to examine the retroflection of my brother’s arm after my brother was hit by Justin Bieber, who was riding an ATV.

9 retrospect (noun) Definition: Sentence:
in considering the past or a past event a review of or meditation on past events Sentence: In retrospect, if I had read Chapter 2 of A Wrinkle in Time when it was assigned, I could have easily completed the writing of my vocabulary story; instead, I ended up reading the chapter during class time and couldn’t complete the quiz.

10 retrograde (adj.) Definition:
: returning to an earlier and usually worse state or condition : moving backward Sentence: Did you know that retrograde motion exists not only in planets, such as Mars, but also in your language arts grade if you don’t keep up with your summer reading?

11 General Vocab: engage (verb)
Definition: to get and keep (someone's attention, interest, etc.) Mantis v. Spider Sentence: To engage the students in learning about hexapods, the teacher showed the video, mantis versus spider.

Definition: to talk or do things with people Definition: Because Meg feels like she is an ugly delinquent, she may not feel comfortable having to interact with other girls her age and may only talk to her brothers and Calvin.

13 SAT Word: exalt (verb) Definition: to raise in rank or dignity; praise
Sentence: Meg hopes that she will be exalted from nerd to courageous cool girl once she travels across time to face evil doers and save her father.

15 Grammar Focus: pronouns
Definition: -any word that replaces nouns or other pronouns -The antecedent is the word the pronoun replaces. Example: The Murry family (antecedent) fixed their (pronoun) sandwiches in the kitchen. vague pronoun: when a pronoun is used but the antecedent is unclear Example: When Meg handed Mrs. Whatsit the sandwich, she sneezed. Who sneezed—Meg or Mrs. Whatsit?
