1 Do Now: What are three adjectives/traits used to describe you as a child? Give examples as to why those traits describe you. Example of Ms.Reynoso’s Do Now: As a child I use to be timid, intelligent, and caring. In elementary school I was always the quiet kid in class that was afraid to speak up because I did not like the spot light. I had very few friends in elementary school because of my timid personality. Although I was timid, I was very intelligent. I use to be great with numbers and often won prizes in Math competitions (this is a REAL fact). I was also a very caring child. I use to help my mom around the house because I knew she worked and I wanted her to have time to relax. At the age of seven I was washing everyone’s clothes in the house. This demonstrates that I cared for my family members.

4 Objectives SWBAT (Students will be able to) Analyze characters by identifying character traits. Give examples and quotes to support the traits. Discuss interactions between characters to determine the traits. Develop character analysis by discussing how character traits can dynamic and static. Below the Do Now, in your own words, write the objective in two sentences and be prepared to share with the class.

5 What is Character analysis? Character analysis is when you evaluate a character's traits, their role in the story, and the conflicts they experience. When analyzing, you will want to think critically, ask questions, and draw conclusions about the character by looking at those three areas. 4 min. (write in your own words and discuss why this is important when reading.) *ask students to share what they read in their own words.

6 Static Character A Static Character- characters that do not experience basic character changes during the course of the story. Record the term in your taxonomy chart and in your vocabulary log write down the new words and definition. If you need clarification on instructions raise your red card.

7 Dynamic Character A Dynamic Character experiences changes throughout the plot of a story. Although the change may be sudden, it is expected based on the story’s events. Record the term in your taxonomy chart and in your vocabulary log write down the new words and definition. If you need clarification on instructions raise your red card.

8 In The Lion King example, Scar would be a static character. He is evil and self-serving in the beginning, and he keeps those traits until he dies. Simba, on the other hand, changes from being cowardly and running away, to becoming brave and confronting his evil uncle.

9 CFU If you feel comfortable with identifying a Static and a dynamic character please raise your Green Card. If you feel like you need one more example please raise your yellow card. If you are completely confused and need me to go over the definitions with more examples, please raise your red card.

10 Another example, in the Movie “Finding Nemo,” Nemo’s father changes from being over protective to finally trusting his son and giving him more freedom. Dory, on the other hand, is bubbly and forgetful at the beginning, and we see no changes in her character throughout the movie.

11 Now, with a partner come up with … A static and a dynamic character from a: movie, book, TV show. Be prepared to discuss why they are static and dynamic. 2 volunteer groups 2 pop sickle stick groups Brainstorm and discuss for 4 min. be prepared to share.

12 Now, you will analyze Charlie since he is the protagonist of the novel and we have a strong insight on him. First you will identify whether you believe Charlie is a Static or a Dynamic character. Secondly, you will identify three of Charlie’s traits. The traits can change if you believe he has shown changes in his character. Thirdly, you will support your ideas with examples from the text. Do not worry about finding direct quotes, we will revisit book for quotes once we begin our “character development log.” (we will discuss in detail later) Focus on what the character has DONE ……and… What the character has THOUGHT and SAID

Feel free to ask your group leaders for help. If you need additional support, please raise your red card and Ms. Castor or myself will come by.

18 Why are we focusing on character development? Looking into the future Assignment: Your assignment is to write a character analysis of a major character in the novel Perks of Being a Wallflower. Once you have chosen a character to analyze, choose three adjectives that describe that character. These adjectives, or character traits, will be the basis of your five-paragraph essay. You will also discuss whether the character is static or dynamic.
