Summary of the Chapter – Summarize the major events of the chapter Symbolism in the Chapter – What symbols do we see in the chapter? Example: Boots represent mortality Themes in the Chapter – What are the major ideas of the chapter? Author’s purpose – Why does your group believe the chapter is written this way? What do you believe the writer wanted the reader to see and feel?

Compare and Discuss your responses to our questions from last class Describe the mood of Chapter 2. Based on your group discussion, do you believe Chapter 3 will be more of the same? How would you set up Chapter 3 if you were the writer?

13 Chapter 2 Discussion Why does Paul describe the young soldier’s lives as a wasteland (20)? Do you agree with the soldiers wanting to take Kemmerich’s boots? Explain your response. What evidence on page 22 would suggest that the soldiers have lost their individuality? Describe Corporal Himmelstoss and his treatment of the boys. Kemmerich’s death illustrates part of the central message of this novel. Based on what you’ve read, what might that message be? Explain using two details from your reading.
