2 Lab Equipment

3 Lab Equipment Your lab equipment should: Be clean before using it.
Be checked (if glassware) for cracks, broken edges, and “stars” – discard if damaged. Be washed, dried, and carefully stored in the proper place when done using it.

4 Goggles Use: Protect eyes during lab experiments
Must be worn if any chemicals or glassware are used

5 Lab Apron Use: Helps protect your skin and clothing from chemicals

6 Beaker Beaker Uses: Storing and mixing liquids May be heated
DO NOT give accurate measurements

7 Erlenmeyer Flask Erlenmeyer Flask Uses: Storing and heating liquid
May be heated DO NOT give accurate measurements

8 Florence Flask Florence Flask Uses: Storing and heating liquid
May be heated DO NOT give accurate measurements

9 Well Plates Well plates are used when we want to perform many small scale reactions at one time. It is like having lots of test tubes available at one time.

10 Stoppers Stoppers Use: Stop (close) laboratory glassware
Different sizes for different size openings

11 Graduated Cylinder Graduated Cylinder Use: Measuring volume
Marked with a milliliter (mL) scale

12 Test Tube Test Tubes Uses:
Mixing, handling, and storing small amounts of liquid May be heated DO NOT give accurate measurements

13 Filtering Flask Use: is a thick-walled Erlenmeyer flask with a short glass tube and hose barb protruding about an inch from its neck.

14 Test Tube Holder To hold a test tube (especially hot test tubes)
Never heat a closed container Do not fill test tube to the top Always tilt the test tube opening away from your body and face Always heat the test tube at an angle

15 Test Tube Rack Test Tube Rack Use:
Hold and store test tubes in an upright position

16 Test Tube Brush Test Tube Brush Use:
Scrub/clean laboratory glassware, particularly test tubes

17 Tongs Tongs Use: Pick up and hold laboratory equipment

18 Hot Plate Hot Plate Use:
Heat liquids in beakers and flasks, especially when the liquid needs to be stirred

19 Bunsen Burner Bunsen Burner Use:
Heat liquids in test tubes, heat solid objects that can be held by tongs, or heat beakers and flasks held by ring stand/ring Uses gas to produce a flame

20 Striker Striker Use: Creates a spark used to light a Bunsen burner

21 Ring Stand Ring Stand Use: A support with many uses

22 Iron Ring/Ring Clamp Iron Ring/Ring Clamp Use:
Fastens to a ring stand as a support for lab equipment

23 Tripod Use: is a portable three-legged frame, used as a platform for supporting the weight and maintaining the stability of some other object.

24 Wire Gauze Wire Gauze Uses
To spread the heat of a flame and support lab equipment while heating

25 Test Tube Clamp Test Tube Clamp Use:
To attach to the ring stand and support test tubes while heating

26 Crucible and Cover Crucible and Cover Use:
Heat small amounts of solid materials at high temperatures

27 Evaporating Dish Evaporating Dish Use:
Heat and evaporate small amounts of liquid

28 Clay Triangle Clay Triangle Use:
Support a crucible and evaporating dish over heat

29 Watch Glass Watch Glass Uses:
Evaporating very small amounts of liquids for Holding solids while being weighed Should NEVER be heated

30 Mortar and Pestle Mortar and Pestle Use:
To grind solids into a fine powder

31 Glass Stirring Rod Glass Stirring Rod Uses:
To stir liquids in flasks or beakers Help in pouring liquids

32 Funnel Funnel Use: Pour liquids or fine-grained solids into a container with a small opening Minimizes spillage

33 Spatula Spatula Use: Transfer solids from one container to another

34 Dropper Dropper Use: Transfer small amounts of liquid

35 Pipette Pipette Use: Transfer small amounts of liquid

36

37 Forceps/Tweezers Forceps/Tweezers Use: Pick up or hold small objects

38 Plastic Wash Bottle Plastic Wash Bottle Use:
Dispense (distilled) water

39 Triple Beam Balance Triple Beam Balance Use: Measure mass manually
Accurate to .10 of a gram

40 Electronic Scale Electronic Scale Use: Measure mass electronically

41 Burette Electronic Scale Use:
a device used in analytical chemistry for the dispensing of variable, measured amounts of a chemical solution.

42 Microscope Electronic Scale Use:
an instrument used to see objects that are too small for the naked eye.

43 Electronic Scale Refrigerating tube Use: Made to condensate vapors.

44 Thermometer Electronic Scale Use:
measures temperature or a temperature gradient using a variety of different principles.

45 Separatory funnel Electronic Scale Use:
a piece of laboratory glassware used in liquid-liquid extractions to separate (partition) the components of a mixture into two immiscible solvent phases of different densities

46 Volumetric Flask Electronic Scale Use:
a type of laboratory flask, calibrated to contain a precise volume at a particular temperature.

47 Petri Dish Use: use to culture cells

48 Cruciable Tongs Use: These tongs are useful when handling a hot crucible, evaporating dishes, flasks, and small beakers.

49 Filter paper Use: a semi-permeable paper barrier placed perpendicular to a liquid or air flow.

50 Micrometer Use: Is a device incorporating a calibrated screw widely used for precise measurement of components

51 Vernier Use: - is a device that lets the user measure more precisely

52 Multimeter Use: is an electronic measuring instrument that combines several measurement functions in one unit. A typical multimeter would include basic features such as the ability to measure voltage, current, and resistance.

53 Filter funnel Use: is a laboratory funnel used for separating solids from liquids via the laboratory process of filtering.

54 Eyewash Station Push this handle to turn on the water – it will stay on until you pull it to turn off. The Eyewash is located in the back of the lab in my chemical closed and under the Safety Shower. You will need to summons me for assistance at the Eyewash Station. Flush your eyes for minutes!

55 Safety Shower Lots of water will come pouring out here to rinse chemicals spilled on you. This is the handle to pull to activate the safety shower.

56 Eyewash Bottle and Fire Extinguisher
Fire Extinguishers are found behind the door, at the door to my chemical room and at the back left corner of the lab stations.
