1 Dual Language Immersion

2 Dual Language Immersion is an education model that integrates native English speakers and native speakers of another language. In Dual Language Immersion classrooms students learn to think, read, write and communicate naturally in two languages: English and Spanish.

3 Academic subjects are taught to all students through both English and Spanish
The two languages are kept separate during instruction – no translation. Language learning takes place primarily through content instruction.

4 Dual Language Immersion

5 Goals of Dual Language Immersion Programs
Academic performance at or above grade level in all content areas Students develop high levels of proficiency in their primary language and a  second language. Students demonstrate positive cross-cultural attitudes and behaviors.

6 Dual immersion programs have been in existence for over 50 years.
There are programs in all 50 states. There are currently over 300 dual immersion programs in California.

7 Benefits of Dual Language Immersion
Both native Spanish speakers and native English speakers maintain and develop their first language while acquiring native-like communication and literacy skills  in a second language.  DLI programs enhance all students’ academic and linguistic abilities in two languages .

8 All students have the opportunity to be both first-language models and second-language learners. Dual immersion creates an additive bilingual environment for all students, since the first language is maintained while the second language is acquired.

9 Dual Language Immersion teachers use strategies such as T. P. R
Dual Language Immersion teachers use strategies such as T.P.R., and repetition and rephrasing to make language comprehensible. They incorporate hands-on materials, visual and graphic displays, and small group instruction to make content instruction comprehensible for all students.

10 Classrooms provide language-rich environments, and
students have daily opportunities to read, write, and speak in both languages in order to facilitate their language development.

11 What research says: Skills and knowledge transfer across languages. A strong foundation in the first language provides a basis for learning a second language. English speaking students in immersion programs perform as well or better than English-speaking students in English-only programs on both standardized math and language arts tests. English Learners who receive instruction in their home language far surpass the achievement levels of ELs in English only programs.

17 Dual Immersion in Rialto
With a goal of improving the achievement of EL students and preparing all students for college and career, we began studying Dual Immersion after attendance at a Dual Language Immersion Symposium at UC Riverside in 2014, and included Dual Language Immersion implementation in the LCAP. We attended CABE Institutes, the ATDLE Conference, have visited numerous successful Dual Language Immersion schools, and gave our kindergarten teachers the opportunity to participate in a Bi-national teacher training project. We worked with Dr. Kris Nichols of CABE to develop our program.
