1 The Circulatory System
Parts and Functions

2 Main Functions 1) Transports oxygen to the cells from the lung
2) Transports carbon dioxide from cells to the lung 3) Transports essential nutrients to the cells 4) Carries wastes from cells

3 3 Types of Circulation cardiac circulation—circulation of blood within the heart pulmonary circulation—from heart to lungs back to heart systemic circulation—from heart to body back to heart

4 The 3 main parts of The Circulatory system
1) Blood 2) The Blood Vessels 3) The Heart

5 Blood

6 The Composition of Blood
The Plasma (Fluid) makes up 55% of the blood volume. The Solids (Cells) make up 45% of the blood volume.

7 Blood Plasma 97% Water Other 3% -Antibodies and Proteins
- Nutrients and Wastes

8 Blood Solids Red Blood Cells -Carry oxygen -Contain Hemoglobin
White Blood Cells -Attack bacteria & other invaders Platelets -Control the blood clotting process

9 Blood VESSELS

10 Types of Blood Vessels Arteries - carries blood away from the heart
- usually oxygenated (one exception) Veins - carries blood towards the heart - deoxygenated (one exception) Capillaries -connect arteries/arterioles to veins/venules - exchanges carbon dioxide oxygen nutrients waste Exceptions: Pulmonary artery – artery leading from heart to lung (deoxygenated) Pulmonary vein – vein leading from lung to heart (oxygenated)

11 Overview of Blood Vessels
Artery Arterioles Capillaries Venules Veins

12 THE HEART

13 Parts of The Heart The Atria (or Atriums) -Receiving Chambers
The Ventricles -Pumping Chambers The Valves -Prevents backflow The Septum -Divides the Heart Heart Contraction and Blood Flow Animation:

17 PATHWAY OF BLOOD Make a list the structures that a red blood cell would pass through when moving in and out of your heart.

18 PATHWAY OF BLOOD a. superior vena cava or 1)b. inferior vena cava
right atrium tricuspid valve—(AV valve) right ventricle pulmonary valve—(semilunar valve) pulmonary artery (goes to lungs)

19 PATHWAY OF BLOOD 7) pulmonary vein 8) left atrium
9) bicuspid valve (left AV valve) 10) left ventricle 11) aortic valve (semilunar valve) 12) aorta

HEART SOUNDS Normal Sounds (48 sec): (3:30 min) When you hear your heart beating, what are you actually listening to?
