5
SIZE, LOCATION, AND DEPTH AFFECT DAMAGE
The two quake's hypocenters were shallow--- The bigger, shallower, and closer the quake is, the more destructive it usually is.
6
No abnormalities were reported at Kyushu Electric Power Co
No abnormalities were reported at Kyushu Electric Power Co.'s Sendai nuclear plant, the only one operating in the country, from either quake.

Because of the darkness, the extent of damage and morbidity and mortality were not immediately clear.

Hundreds of callers reported the collapse of at least 19 buildings, extensive building and infrastructure damage, and people buried or trapped under building debris.
9
At least 2 people were killed and 45 injured during the ground shaking that knocked down houses and caused roads to buckle.

- - - But, initial search and rescue operations were repeatedly disrupted by aftershocks, then the second, much larger earthquake occurred.
