1 Welcome to our College Admissions Panel Night!

2 Choosing a College: Finding the Right Fit
Tonight we will be looking at many factors that go in to selecting a college . It is an individual process for each and every one of you and what will be most important to one student or family, won’t be They will include but are not limited to, cost, location, academic rigor, major, and size of the university. How do I find a school that fits me?

3 College Process

4 Fields of Study If you plan to major in a “specialty”, it must be a consideration when making your choice. Examples– Architecture, Accounting, Engineering, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy Thinking about a major like English, Psychology or History?– Most colleges will have. Are you undecided? Some colleges have programs to help students that are undecided. Some of the majors are only offered at specific universities and they are very structured programs. – see Examples on the slide. Undecided? Some universities allow students to wait until their sophomore year to declare a major. Bradley is an example of a university that has program in place for students who are undecided – to help them select a major.

5 Location How far from home? Certain geographical area?
Urban, suburban or rural?

6 Size of the School Your educational needs and personality reflect your choice of school size. Could be the most important factor. Very Large: 20,000+ students Medium: 4,000-10,000 Small: under 3,000 Visiting college campuses is a great way to determine the size that will best fit your needs. Be sure to visit a variety of sizes of universities Colleges are generally broken down into a number of buildings – so even though the population is close to Neuqua’s , it will be more spread out and will have a bigger feel to it.

7 COST Be sure to look at scholarship opportunities and financial aid at every college. Be sure to have at least one college on your list that is a “financial safety” for your family!

9 How to Get Started? Visit colleges over spring break and summer
Ask questions Attend college visits at NVHS– over 100 in the fall Meet with your counselor– make an appointment Attend the spring college fair on March 21st Use Naviance
