OBJECTIVE: identify the culture of early humans: language, art, religion and gender roles. Calisthenics: (DO NOT WRITE THE QUESTION) What were the earliest tools made of? What did early humans use fire for?

3 Go Exploring! Task: Time travel to 1940! You are a teenager, walking with your friends through Lascaux, France. You come upon a cave; you and your friends love exploring! Light your torch, and come inside! Explore!

5 Culture Art: expression in pictures and symbols
Language: spoken and written communication Religion: the worship of God, deities (gods), or spirits. Gender Roles: Male and Female

6 Draw Inferences about early human culture
In order to make guesses about the early humans:  1) examine the images of the cave art from the "Lascaux Caves" link and from Mss. Landy’s Power Point slides. 2) think about what you already know about early human 3) write what you think might be the features of early human culture. 10 minutes to explore and write.

7 Language Why did early humans develop language? Did they have a written language? Human language probably developed as the result of a need to work together

8 Art What did early humans show in their art? What types of art did early humans create? Early humans mostly portrayed nature in their art

9 Gender Roles According to this painting, who hunted in hunter-gatherer societies? Men or women?

10 Religion What did early humans believe in or worship?
Early humans probably worshipped nature. It’s believed that the cave painting were a way to honor the spirits of the animals.
