5 TIPS to HS Success Get involved in at least one after-school activity. INVOLVEMENT breeds a positive outlook and academic success. Use your resources & ask for HELP! Maintain an academic FOCUS. What you do today and tomorrow in your high school classes will impact you in 4-5 years. Maintain a BALANCE between school and personal life. Know your limits and realize when you may be taking on too much.

6 Where Can I Get Help? Resource Study Hall: Supervised by an Education Assistant. Needs administration/counselor approval. Math Resource Study Hall/Tutor: math teachers available every hour for support. ITI: Available for students with an IEP or a 504 plan. 1-on-1 assistance from individual teachers: Make personal contact to determine availability. Student Services: Meet with your counselor to discuss problems you may be having and brainstorm ideas for solutions.

8 Career Clusters The 16 Career Clusters have been identified to help students develop a program of study with a purpose in mind. Your Cluster Finder results (FLEX) can help guide you to choose your electives. See Pages ______ in course guide.

9 Required courses for 9th grade
ENGLISH 9/HONORS MATHEMATICS (VARIOUS COURSES) BIOLOGY/HONORS WORLD HISTORY/AP HUMAN GEOGRAPHY FOUNDATIONS OF FITNESS – PE 9 ELECTIVES **All Core Courses, PE 9 and Study Hall will already be scheduled for you in PowerSchool. Cores will be assigned based on teacher recommendations. **You will only need to choose your electives in the PowerSchool portal when registering.

Students earn 1 credit per class per semester (D- or above is considered passing) How many credits did this student earn semester 1 of their freshman year? 12 Weighted Grades Students graduating from MFHS will receive a weighted grade in: Core subject honors classes. Classes receiving college credit while in high school. (example: H Information Technology TC) Each weighted course shall be given an additional grade point value of .025 on a 4.0 scale per semester class.

13 GPA – Example GPA is on a 4.0 system, for each class that meets weighted criteria, .025 is added to the semester GPA Honors Geometry B 3 Honors English 9 A 4 Spanish II B 3 Honors Symphonic Band A 4 Honors Biology B 3 Physical Education 9 B 3 H Information Technology TC A 4 Total: 24 GPA: TOTAL/# of COURSES /7 = 3.429 4 weighted classes, add .025 for each: =3.529

14 World Language If you are currently taking a World Language, and would like to continue, sign up for Level II of that same language. Example: Spanish Spanish II If you would like to take a World Language in 9th grade and have not taken it in 8th grade, sign up for Level 1. Within UW System, only UW-Madison requires minimum 2 years of same foreign language for admission. Exit criteria varies.

15 Course Programming: Reminders
Course Guide is also available online. Choose your classes wisely. Schedule changes are only allowed on a very limited basis. You are making a commitment to courses when registering. PowerSchool portal for making course selections open 2/1/17 through 2/6/17. Course Registration Sheets will be due on 2/6/17 to your FLEX teacher. Be sure to sign up for both semesters of a year long course.

16 On-Line Registration Reminder: Select courses online (PowerSchool) between February 1nd and February 6th. Reminder: Freshmen will be automatically scheduled for All Core Courses including PE 9 and Study Hall. Just register for your electives. Thursday night!! SPIN Night (Student Parent Information Night): February 2 at 6:00 in MFHS auditorium. Let’s take a look at the Student Course Selection Screen.
