1 Welcome Sophomore Parents!

2 Calendar Highlights Fall/Spring schedules should include career/college requirements Read the daily bulletin! Join Clubs, Sports, and Extracurricular Activities VOLUNTEER!!! Attend the UNR College Fair, Oct 26th, 12-4pm Steam Fair, Nov 6th, THS Gym Start gathering data about colleges (Naviance) Get A’s and B’s…C is the lowest grade that can be used for university admission….courses can be repeated for higher grades Parents: Attend a Booster meeting for volunteer opportunities and events. Every 2nd Weds of the Month at 6pm in the Library.

All students received unofficial transcripts and requirement checklists in Student Success class. Double check that all credits are completed or in progress. (refer to pages 9-11 in student planner for details on requirements) Have a strong academic year!

7 Community Service Requirement
As part of the Sophomore graduation requirements (Class of 2017), sophomores must perform a minimum total of 30 hours of Community Service. The community service activity form and instructions are available on the THS website.

8 Community Service is: Volunteering for a Non-Profit: Humane Society, Library, Boys and Girls Club, AYSO, Kid Zone, Historical Society, American Red Cross and others. Participating in community activities or events: Local PTO events at elementary schools, Project MANA Food Drive, Toys for Tots, Scouting Service Projects and others. Volunteering for THS jobs/events that are not part of your club duties. Remember…if it helps the community it is community service. Community Service IS NOT!!! Working for your parents or at a place of business even if you are not paid. Helping out relatives or helping an elderly neighbor with his/her yard work, tutoring your neighbor or babysitting a friend’s child. (you do this because you are part of a family). Donating food or money. Working at your church performing your typical church responsibilities.

This is your “go-to” place for researching colleges and managing your college list. Personality test and career information Scholarship postings Sophomores should now have access to the “College Tab” or: Naviance.com I need to register

11 Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test
PSAT: Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test Practice test for the SAT 3 hour exam that measures aptitude in Critical Reading, Math, and Writing. National Merit Scholarship Program uses it to determine if a student is eligible to receive a scholarship Colleges use the scores as a recruitment tool. Colleges receive your child’s scores and can start sending information. Should also take as a Junior in order to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship- Which is scoring in the top 1% of the nation and receiving a $ scholarship for college ($15, or fee waiver)
