4. Settlement of Texas
After Mexico won its independence from Spain in 1821, the government asked settlers to move to a territory called Texas.
Settlers were called tejanos.

5. Stephen F. Austin
American pioneer who led settlers into Texas (1821), and later worked for independence from Mexico.
He was imprisoned by the Mexicans for his efforts to create a separate state government for Texas within Mexico.

6. Texas Revolution
Conflict arose about how to govern the territory of Texas.
By 1835, Texas decided to fight for independence.

7. Texas Revolution
In 1836, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna was defeated by the Texan army, led by Sam Houston. Texas became an independent republic.

Believed strongly in “manifest destiny,” and helped gain more western land for the United States

9. Mexican-American War 1845: Congress voted to annex Texas
Fighting broke out along the Texas/Mexico border
Polk asked Congress to declare war against Mexico in 1846

Polk sent U.S. troops to drive the Mexican army out of California
1848: Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo signed to end the Mexican-American war

The Oregon Treaty of 1846 settled a land dispute between the U.S. and Great Britain
In 1853, the United States bought land from Mexico in the Gadsen Purchase. This gave the U.S. control of land that became the first 48 states.
